I will point you to your local software store, you need to purchase it, Word
is not free.

Having said that...I have a colleague who has a CD of 'Microsoft Works Suite
2005' with Word on it...does anybody know if it is possible to use that, if
its already been installed on another pc?

No, but you CAN download the free Openoffice suite.....

Is it safe to download? and will it provide a working Word program that I can
then try and install a German language package for? I dont use powerpoint,
excel (only ever rarely) and have no need for Outlook Express...hence just
needing word.

Technically it's possible, however, your colleague would be in violation of
the EULA, and you may run in to activation problems.

Open Office has indeed a Word-compatible word processor that (as an advanced
Excel user) I find more intuitive than Word. there are I believe other
language options....

No, Word is commercial software for sale and is not legally available for
download anywhere.

You can find Word for sale at your local computer store or at many web
sites. You can buy it alone, as part of Microsoft Office, or least
expensively, as part of Microsoft Works *Suite* (not the regular MS Works
you have).

Do you know whether you need a particular version of Word.? If you don't
need the latest version, you can probably get a good deal on a used copy
someplace like eBay.

You also might be able to use an alternative word processor, like the one in
the freeware OpenOffice (which you *can* download), the inexpensive
StarOffice, or the moderately priced Corel WordPerfect Office.

The only "Word program" IS Microsoft Word. Open Office provides a compatible
application for the MS Word file formats.

You can't legitimately download any of the Office applications,
free or otherwise.

1) Go to store/shop that sells computer software.

2) Purchase either Microsoft Word, a Microsoft Office suite (or the
Microsoft Works Suite) that contains it, or Corel's WordPerfect.
Although, to be frank, Publisher would probably be a better choice than
Word for such things as invitations.

3) Return home.

4) Insert installation CD in PC's CD drive and follow the on-screen
prompts and instructions to install application and desired additional
features.

The only thing you can download from the MS website is a TRIAL version of
Office. Otherwise you will have to go to your local store and purchase it.
You may find that your institution has Student versions for very little
money, or if you do not do extreme formatting, then you can try Open
Office, which is free and is Word compatible....

Thanks Abi, Your question was mine. "Where is word on my new computer??!!"
I guess I was lucky to have it included on the last 2 computers I bought.
So it's off to the store to purchase Word.
