movie maker won't save correctly

Using movie maker 2.1, wins xp, home, sp3
I had problems with MM so I repaired it from the MM.ex file in i386. Now it
works better BUT when I save a project to my computer as .wmv, it will not
play back or open and there is no thumbnail image on the saved file's icon.
This strange file can not be used by Youtube, nor re-opened by Movie Maker
which tells me it is not a valid Movie Maker file (the one it just saved as
..wmv). Somehow this seems to be a codec issue but I have no idea how to fix
it.
Please offer some suggestions from your experience with MM.
thanks
Jim

Just tried again. Now the .MSWMM files will re-open in MM but the .WMV files
will not play!
I have made many videos before and never had this issue.
