Task manager includes memory card in disk usage
 

My Windows 10 task manager shows the disk usage of C: (the system hard disk) and E: (a memory card socket). This is quite annoying as the total disk usage shows 50% when the hard disk is fully utilised, because it's including the empty memory card socket. Any way of stopping it including the memory card socket in the calculation?

disks, just capacity, r/w transfer rate, response time and activity.

each internal disk separately and an SD socket even with an inserted SD
card does not appear.

Possibly the OP has confused 50% activity on the graph as showing the
disk is 50% full when he knows it is near 100%. And explained that away
by assuming that he is seeing the mean usage of the disk and the empty
SD card socket ("0%").

No, you're both incorrect. I'll be more specific.

On the main task manager screen (processes tab), along the top is x% CPU, x% memory, x% disk, x% network. It's this disk percentage which is wrong, as if drive C: is fully utilised, it shows 50%, as it's totalling two "disks".

On the performance tab, down the left side is CPU, Memory, Disk 0 (C:), Disk 1 (E:), Ethernet, GPU 0. E: is "generic SD/MMC/MS RO USB device", which is a camera card socket on the front of my PC, with no card inserted. This obviously reads 0% usage, while C: goes up to 100%, but on the processes tab, it shows the average, which is up to 50%.

By "disk usage" most people would assume you meant the percentage of
space used, in fact it's showing the % of transfer rate.

It most certainly does show usage. If you look on the performance tab, you get "active time" and "disk transfer rate". No matter how fast or slow it's transferring, if the disk is maxed out (ie. the heads are working overtime accessing lots of little files) it'll show 100%. The problem is on the processes tab, it shows the average usage for all drives on the system. And it's including my (empty) camera card reader. The average of 100% and 0% is 50%.

If you've made a pool for storage space, this may be causing what you're
seeing in Task Manager.

I have no pools. Just a standard 1TB rotary hard disk and a camera card reader.

I meant usage as in how often it's in use. For example if a company's van was being driven around 24 hours a day, it's 100% used, it cannot be used for any other trips. But it may not be driving flat out, it could be going only 30mph.

It isn't. It can show 100% at 1MBps or 100% at 100MBps. It depends on how fragmented the files are, and if it's having to read multiple files from different sectors.

You got me thinking, so I tried "hide empty drives" and "don't show hidden drives" in the folder options. Drive E: disappeared from windows explorer, but unfortunately this had no effect on the task manager.

if you put an SD card in the slot, and then in File Explorer right click
the drive letter, do you get an "Eject" option for it, or does it seem
to think it's a non-removable device?
