Cannot install driver

Hello all
I am trying to install a Pinnacle video driver for use wih my Dazzle
DVC100 capture 'gadget'.
I did use Pinnacle Studio 15 for this, but had problems so switched to
AVS Video Recorder which was more successful.
Since I did not want to use Studio 15 any more I uninstalled it.
Unfortunately it also uninstalled the drivers. I downloaded the driver
installation from Pinnacle and tried that. The installation proceeded
partway and then I was greeted with a message
The wizard was interrupted before Pinnacle Video Driver could be
compleely installed.
You system has not been modified. To complete installation at another
time, please run setup again.
I have rerun this 6 or 7 times, rebooting, different compatibility, as
administrator but it makes no difference.
I then decided to reinstall Studio 15, which installed ok but again
the video driver was not installed, but with no error message.
It seems that I just cannot install these video drivers.
I have found one or two suggestions but they make no difference.
Can anyone help ?

Would install in Safe Mode work ?

Maybe both of these programs have drivers ?
Could it be a conflict ? Or is it just a
service one program uses, with hooks to
something driver related ?

The driver is part of the Pinnacle Studio 15 program. Since I
uninstalled Studio 15, however, I cannot install DVC100 drivers. If I
install Studio 15, even though it should install drivers, it doesn't,
with no error message. If I try to install them using an installation
exe from Pinnacle, then I get the Wizard was interrupted message.
If I try and install in safe mode I get a message that Microsoft
Installer cannot be used in safe mode. I found a suggestion on
Micsosoft Answers to try a clean boot. I did this and the pc would not
boot at all, I had to roll back.

Are there references to the driver files in the registry? Maybe the
uninstall code was poorly written and the registry contains entries that
indicate that the drivers are already installed and don't need to be
reinstalled.

I would consider this approach:
- install PS15
- install Revo Uninstaller
- Use Revo to uninstall PS15, use the *Advanced Mode
- Once Revo is done reboot, then install PS15 again.

*Advanced Mode
includes the Moderate mode and performs a deep and thorough scan to
find all of the application's leftover information in the Registry
and on the hard drive.

Thanks for the reply and advice.
I did as you suggested with the following results:
Revo left entries in registry for pixie, Program Data for Pinnacle and
Pinnacle HD

According to CCleaner, the Studio uninstaller and Revo left entries in
the registry for Public\Documents\Pinnacle and
Public\Documents\Pinnacle\Program Files (x86) and
Public\Documents\Pinnacle\Program Files (x86)\Pinnacle

Also left folders Program Data\Pinnacle and Program Data\Pinnacle HD

I deleted these registry entries and the folders then rebooted and
installed Studio 15 again.
It made no difference at all, still did not install the DVC100 drivers
and using the driver installer from Pinnacle again led to Installer
was Interrupted.

I have been investigating further. I have found an installation log
for the driver installation which states that it failed with a 1603
error.
Searching for this gives the following:

Error 1603 issues

Error 1603 is an error caused in Windows 7 while trying to install a
Microsoft Windows Installer package. When the error is caused, it
prompts the user with an error message and an ‘OK’ button. When the
user acknowledges the error message the installation aborts and rolls
back. This means that the user can no longer be able to install the
package until the Error 1603 is fixed.
Reasons

The reasons behind error 1603 are several. It can occur if you are
trying to install it into an encrypted folder. It can also appear if
you are trying to install on a drive which is actually a
substitute/temporary drive. Windows Installer is installed under the
SYSTEM account. If the SYSTEM account doesn’t have Read/Write
permissions over the folder to which you are installing, the "Error
1603" will occur.
Remedial measures

"Error 1603" can be resolved in different ways depending on the
reasons behind the error. If you are trying to install it in an
encrypted folder, try installing it in a non-encrypted folder. Also
make sure that the folder is not in a substitute drive. To modify
permission rights, open ‘My Computer’ and right click on the drive to
which you want to install. Select ‘Properties’ and then select
‘Security’ tab. Verify that the SYSTEM account is selected. If not,
click ‘Add’ and add the SYSTEM account. Now go to ‘Permissions’ tab
and select ‘Full Control’ under ‘Allow. Click ‘OK’ and close the
dialog boxes. This will set the permission levels for SYSTEM account
and allows you to install it in any folder under the selected drive.

I do not have an encrypted folder or substitute drive.

Since it is trying to install into C:\Windows\System32\Drivers, I
cannot alter the permissions for this folder.

Since I live in the UK this is not really a viable proposition.
Also, who will this call ?

You can not call the Yanks from your area?
How very odd.

Hello all
I am trying to install a Pinnacle video driver for use wih my

I did use Pinnacle Studio 15 for this, but had problems so
switched to AVS Video Recorder which was more successful.
Since I did not want to use Studio 15 any more I uninstalled it.
Unfortunately it also uninstalled the drivers. I downloaded the
driver installation from Pinnacle and tried that. The installation
proceeded partway and then I was greeted with a message
The wizard was interrupted before Pinnacle Video Driver could be
compleely installed.
You system has not been modified. To complete installation at
another time, please run setup again.
I have rerun this 6 or 7 times, rebooting, different
compatibility, as administrator but it makes no difference.
I then decided to reinstall Studio 15, which installed ok but again
the video driver was not installed, but with no error message.
It seems that I just cannot install these video drivers.
I have found one or two suggestions but they make no difference.
Can anyone help ?

Phone the USA ? You gonna pay my bill :-)
Again, who will this call ? Cos if it is Corel Support (Corel taken
Pinnacle over) they are completely useless. Already tried them and was
told We dont support Studio 15, buy the new version.

Following on, I have just looked at the registry through Regedit.
There were multiple entries for DVC100 of the form

I am, however, reluctant to delete these.

There are several ControlSets. There is CurrentControlSet
which is, well, current.

And another feature to know about is "Last Known Good".
There is some relationship between these control sets
and that feature.

In addition, drivers have a rollback feature, where you
can roll back to the previous driver. The depth of the
rollback is only one level, so there is only the
current driver and the previous driver to rely on.
Before you head out on a "delete at all costs"
mission, consider there is a design to how it works.

*******

Try Device Manager and enable Hidden Devices. And have
a look in there. I think my BT878 drivers were hiding
in there. Drivers that didn't actually do anything.
When I would use DScaler, it seemed to have its own
drivers applied at runtime. There were several potential
drivers - a set belonging to some DVR package (which I'd
installed), the DScaler ones (leave no trace), and the
Hauppauge WinTV drivers (used on some installs and
not others). I don't recollect any huge collisions
because I didn't make a concerted effort to load/run
them all at the same time.

So have a look in Hidden Devices and see what is there.
And don't go deleting everything in there.

http://www.makeuseof.com/tag/how-to-...-from-windows/

cmd.exe (Run as Administrator...)

set devmgr_show_nonpresent_devices=1
devmgmt.msc

(Then, in Device Manager, View : Show hidden devices)

Normally you'd want to use Programs and Features
to clean up stuff. But that's another option.

The last DVC100 driver here, might be a Vista era driver
being used in Windows 7. Too bad they're InstallShield,
as otherwise I would have tried to read the INF files.

http://cdn.pinnaclesys.com/SupportFi...readmeHW10.htm

The OEM22.inf and OEM21.inf referred to in the log,
Windows "anonymizes" INF names at install time. The INF
files have their original file name, recorded at the
top of the text. So if the user installed "dog.inf" for
the audio section of DVC100, and "cat.inf" for
the video section of DVC100, maybe the files become
"oem21.inf" and "oem22.inf". On the assumption that
the system already had oem20.inf before the start
of the install process.

Some hardware, the user is expected to run the installer
CD, before plugging in the hardware. The device may "bind"
to some previous driver if it is plugged in when the driver
CD is used. Even the installer GUI itself, may say something
like "now, plug in the device" so you don't screw it up.

HTH,
Paul
