Sound Card or Video Card problem?
-----Original Message----- Firstly I just upgraded to WinXP Pro from Win98SE. It was a clean install, and all the hardware was working well in Win98. The hardware in question is a Sound Blaster 16, and an Geforce2 MX (32MB) running in an Athlon850 with 384MB of RAM. Everything in the install went smoothly, no hang-ups or anything. When I go to play any music there is a very strong distortion. It gets much worse with visualizations enabled, slowing down significantly. I upgrade both Sound and Video card drivers to no avail. I have also removed and then reinstalled the drivers. The mic is not in so that doesn't seem to be the problem. The distortion does improve by reducing the screen resolution and even more by disabling the Nvidia drivers and going with the standard windows drivers. However the distortions are always present and the sound is flat. This would lead me to believe that it is the video card. However the other correlation is that the sound improves as use of resources in reduced. I need some ideas on how to determine which component it is and if possible some ideas on how to fix it. I am prepared to buy one but not both of the components to fix the problem, if it is hardware and not software. . Do you have onboard Audio? How much RAM is installed? |
