Is SP1 or SP2 essential for installing dotnet?
 

I read from the Release Notes for an ATI videocard that Microsoft Dotnet 1.1
Must be installed for using Catalyst 5.8 version of the video and display
drivers.
I fail to understand what features of dotnet does a videocard use for video
display or TV tuning?
That apart, dotnet has to be used with XP with SP1 or SP2 installed and
these two have problems with the Network Connection Manager.
As a result, the user may get the TV functioning and lose some other
features which are working on his computer.
Can dotnet be installed on XP without SP1 or SP2? Would it work
satisfactorily?

First - let me say it sounds like your system must have some serious issues
if you have not installed Service Pack 1 or Service Pack 2 for Windows XP
yet. You elude to it - but not in much detail - perhaps if you expand on
it, we can help you fix that. You are really "out of date" and possibly
putting your machine/information at unnecessary risk - depending on your
situation and setup.

The ATI driver likely needs .NET because the people who wrote it at ATI
designed it to use the .NET framework. That simple. The ATI (and NVidia)
drivers do so much more these days than tell your OS what type of video card
you have.. They tweak and poke and prod and optimize and twist and turn and
magnify.. So many things that it has to get pretty "up-close and personal"
with the OS. .NET may have made this easier for the developers to do.

Looking through requirments - I cannot find explicitly (so far) where .NET
requires SP1 or SP2.
It may, however - since I do not have any systems not patched.

My suggestion is to backup your system with Ghost or something similar and
give it a go.

The name is .Net is a special programming language and MS provides the
"run-time" .Net 1.1 free. However, you need to have at least SP1 in order
to get it. ATi is just using the provided Windows features.

We use dotnet on our workplace network for one item of web software, we have
SP1

You do NOT need .Net for ATI - just get the "Control Panel" version rather
than the "Catalyst Control Center" version. Only the CCC requires .Net;
it's fancy and cute, but the normal control panel version gives you access
to all the same settings, just not as fancy. And CCC is a real memory
hog, since it loads the .Net runtime at system startup, and it stays
loaded forever.

get the 25MB "with Control Panel" package.

and get and use the "Catalyst Uninstaller" to be sure the previous driver
is completely removed before installing the new one.

NOTE that the installation requirements for the .NET Framework 1.1 SDK
are DIFFERENT than the installation requirements for the .NET
Framework 1.1 Distributable.

Nowhere in this document do I find any requirements for either SP1 OR
SP2 under XP. All that is required is a version of XP.

Personally, I would not install .NET Framework unless your XP Service
Pack level was SP2.
