Can't install Windows 7 update for Meltdown CPU flaw

According to
https://support.microsoft.com/en-us/...pdate-kb405689

"This update will be downloaded and installed automatically from
Windows Update. To get the standalone package for this update, go to
the Microsoft Update Catalog website."

This goes to:
https://www.catalog.update.microsoft...px?q=KB4056897

Where is found:
2018-01
Security Only Quality Update for Windows 7 for x86-based Systems
(KB4056897) Windows 7 Security Updates 1/4/2018 36.2mb
(Yes, mine is 32-bit)

Clicking the download link saves the file:
windows6.1-kb4056897-x86_bb612f57e082c407b8cdad3f4900275833449e71.msu

Running this produces the error 0x8023800c, which apparently is a
timeout error.

So what am I missing here? I would like to install this update without
going through the whole Windows Update process of downloading a long
list of items I don't want or need.

I read a article earlier that you should NOT do this without checking to
make sure your antivirus was patched first... pcworld I believe. No
patch could hose your machine even worse

Well, I figured it out. Instead of saving and running the .msu file, I
should have selected the option to "run with stand-alone installer."
That worked.

That patch is gated by the status of your AV product.

If the AV product has not been patched to "accept"
that update, there will be trouble.

The AV product (by agreement with Microsoft), sets a flag
to indicate the AV is ready for the MS patch, and then the MS
patch can "take".

Failure to do that, could cause Windows startup problems. As
the AV thinks it's under attack.

(One user was bricked yesterday. Flag or no flag.)

The presence of this key, was supposed to indicate all is well.

Key="HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE"Subkey="SOFTWARE\Microsoft \Windows\CurrentVersion\QualityCompat"
"cadca5fe-87d3-4b96-b7fb-a231484277cc" DWORD 0

Thanks, Paul. I did read that on the MS page for the patch, and
checked my registry for the proper entry before I tried downloading
the patch.

Does Windows Defender block the security update too?

No.
(Assuming you keep it reasonably up to date anyway)

Did not know that.

The presence of this key, was supposed to indicate all is well.

Key="HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE"Subkey="SOFTWARE\Microsoft \Windows\CurrentVersion\QualityCompat"
"cadca5fe-87d3-4b96-b7fb-a231484277cc" DWORD 0

I checked and that key is present, but I'm not getting any updates
through Windows Update. I've been trying for a couple of days.

I have W7 HP x64 SP1 installed with Avast Free Antivirus 17.9.2322.
Also, I don't have an Intel CPU, I have this one: AMD A8-3870K.

It worked on my Win-7, x64 box.
I know that doesn't help you, sorry.

Yes, that is what I did.

I thought everyone would as that was the choice set as the default in
my download window and I'm too tired to fight MS's defaults this
morning.
