Help - Windows defender virus definition update fails
 

For the past day, I've been trying to install the Defender virus
definitions, and it fails. Download appears successful; however, it
fails once it tries to install the definitions. The fail message gives
error code 80070714, but the troubleshooting wizard references
"Background Intelligent Transfer Service" and "Windows Update". I try
repairing, but it reports the problem "service registration is missing
or corrupt". That entry give NO further info to fix that issue.
Google leads were not helpful either.

This problem only started about three days ago (1/20/2016). Everything
was working as expected with no problems before my most recent update.
I successfully installed the updates from the monthly thing that
Microsoft puts out. I do manually update Windows Update. I have not
installed or had reason to update any other software (Microsoft or
others) in the meantime.

Is this a bug in Microsoft's update?
Are other people having this problem now?
Did MS change its update prolicy that started causing the update to
fail?

I'm running Windows 8.1 Professional 64-bit. I have not moved to
Windows 10 yet nor have any immediate plan or desire to do so. I've
disabled the GXW (sp?) to turn off MS' nagging. Note that my doing
that (over a month ago) did not interfere with my doing Windows updates.

I don't know and I might be wrong, but I think that
disabling updates and keep using Windows Defender at the
same time is not a good idea. That's why I disabled Defender
and use a third-party AV.

Microsoft Security Essentials (MSE) updates its virus definitions
using Windows Automatic Update. We can also use its built-in
command "MpCmdRun" to download and install virus definition
updates without Automatic Update.

Now, even if those aren't exactly applicable, the implication
is that there are mechanisms that don't need a working
wuauserv or bits service.

You would try "mpcmdrun /?" to get a list of command
line parameters to use with it.

This page has some more up-to-date looking links for
Windows Defender standalone updates. I clicked the 64 bit
one, and the initial download information indicated the
same file size (132MB). So the file is likely the same as the
two above. At least in this case, you can verify before
you click, that these are the correct ones :-)
