I'm a long-time WinXPpro user. I'm wondering how familiar will Win8
with Classic Shell http://www.classicshell.net/ look to me? Will
there still be a long learning curve?

Web based forums are like subscribing to 10 different newspapers
and having to visit 10 different news stands to pickup each one.
Email list-server groups and USENET are like having all of those
newspapers delivered to your door every morning.

You will find the interface pretty comprehensible.

You will find it very similar, but not exactly the same. How long it
will take to get accustomed to it depends on you.

And by the way, as far as I'm concerned Start 8 (not free, but very
inexpensive--only $4.99) will make the Windows 8 interface even more
like the older interfaces, and that's what I recommend.

ClassicShell provides a lot of tweaks. For more expert users, lots of
tweaks are desirable. For some users, they don't want to spend time
tweaking a program so Start8 might be more to their liking.

ClassicShell is free.
Start8 has a 30-day trial and thereafter costs $5. That's pretty cheap.

ClassicShell not only gives you various skins for the Start Menu but
also lets you modify Windows Explorer and Internet Explorer to expose
some prior functions.
Start8 just focuses on the Start Menu.

Thanks to all who commented; especially those who mentioned Start8. I
didn't know about Start8 but it sounds like it would be even my
appropriate for my needs since I'm not interested in doing a lot of
tweaking.

Any further comments on Start8 would be welcome.

I recommend start8, it's the most stable, works most like the original
win7 start, iobit's version crashes a lot, classic shell is sloooow
maneuvering around.

anyway it's worth the $4.99

And Start8 isn't freeware either. But both Start8 and StartIsBack are
so inexpensive that their cost shouldn't deter most people from
choosing them.
