Dual boot W7 & W10?
 

If I add a second W7 drive on my PC, and then upgrade that drive to
W10, should my first W7 drive be affected? Both drives would have the
same W7 Product Key to start with. I wud not want to lose my first
drive. My intent wud be to dual boot the two drives.

I've heard horror stories about the downgrade process.
... with that in mind...
I'd make an image of win 7 with a reputable image program then upgrade to win10 and active. Then blow it away and put
your old win 7 back. Then just clean install win 10 on the new drive.

The good part I think about this is that windows 10 will then make a proper dual boot, as when it loads it will rewrite
the boot and see windows 7 there and just make a dual boot.

I am confused. If I make a backup image, then upgrade my W7 to W10
and activate it (which of course I can do), and then restore original
W7 from the backup image back again, this destroying the
installed/activated W10 - what did that accomplish? And what does all
that do to help/work with an independent W10 install on a 2nd new
drive?

I guess I must be dense, Sorry.

I was thinking of doing just what you say here. The downgrade process in
the askvg.com three steps seems fraught with dangers.
Do you know anyone who's actually done this?
I know it sounds ok; it handles the activating of Win10 with MS
adequately, and I can't think of any inherent problem.
But I'd feel better about it if I'd heard from a good friend that it had
worked.

Nope, you can't do that.

Yep, in my impatience, I found that out. I made a backup (thank God),
then installed a dupe, but small copy of same W7 system on a second
drive, then upgraded that drive to W10. Guess what, my original W7
drive was said to be 'not activated'. Of course, my backup saved me.

So you are very correct.

I have found the best way to dual boot is to use a good boot manager, I
use BootIt, which also allows me to make an image before booting into
Windows. The advantage of doing this is that you can have as many
partitions on a hard drive as you want, you are not limited to just 4.
Each partition can have an operating system and none of them will see
the other ones and each will think it is installed on the first
bootable partition.

This allows me to also move and resize any partition if needed, without
affecting the operation of the OS. I have been using this type of setup
for about 10 years and am very happy with the way it works.
