PC won't stay connected for large downloads

When downloading large files, say files over about 1.5 MB, my XP pc's
won't stay connected. This is particularly annoying when downloading
the Windows updates, Firefox updates, and other software updates,
because often the files are very large. Although I can eventually get
the files by exiting and restarting Windows Update (thank goodness for
the feature that allows for partial downloads), this requires my
constant attention until the file has been received. I'm running all
my PC's behind a Linksys 802.11b router; the problem exists with a
desktop HP, and a Gateway Laptop both running XP, SP3. It makes no
difference whether the PC's are hardwired or wireless, and it makes no
difference whether the settings (in the case of the desktop) are fixed
IP or DHCP. Another PC running Windows 98SE does not exhibit the
problem, hardwired to the router and using a fixed IP address. Is it
an XP issue, or Router issue? Can anyone give me a clue how to fix
this ?

Alot depends on youre ISP,if you use a dial-up,or DCL type, but have min
kps rates, then with update, run it manually, open update with "customize"
setting, select 15 updates or so at a time..Also,try downloading "Network
Monitor" for xp,get at microsoft downloads.

Neither of those helped the problem. As I stated in my original post,
Windows updates aren't the only files involved. Also, if I connect on
dialup, either PC can download as big a file as necessary (might take
about forever) - the problem ONLY exists when connected through my
router, and only with the XP machines. Anyone else have any ideas ?
