Alek April 7th 20 12:37 AM

I'm pulling my hair out!

My Win10 desktop is frozen!

The desktop has all the icons it is supposed to have but clicking on any
one of them does nothing.

The taskbar has the Windows Start icon at one end and the date/time
thing at the other end.

Again clicking does nothing.

Aha! I see a stationary hourglass next to the pointer.

crtl-sh-esc is ignored.

ctrl-alt=delete brings up the expected menu.

I have everything backed up. What should I do????????????????????

Thanks/

The easiest way is to use an electric shaver ;Â* There is evidence that
it can trim your hair very efficiently rather than pulling them.

Since your control-alt-delete works, you've got options...

Can't read the red text. I think the first sais something about a
Cortana button, but I removed Cortana a long time ago.

Thanks.

Can't read the red text.

You could move the mouse to any one of the three panels that
contain a RED message and left-click your mouse. That should enlarge
the message to a comfortable size for reading.

I assume, that the first explorer.exe, which displays the desktop, has
frozen. After a few hours it may have restarted automatically.
Next time: Kill every explorer.exe in the task manager, start a new
explorer.exe from within the task manager (file, new task or so, I
have a german Windows). You can test this any time.

M.

Doesn't work in Brave, works in Firefox and Safari.

Enlarging just hides the real problem, which is red on blue as the color
choice. The same type of problem exists with red and green. :-)

Use the button at the top "Download original".

Work with a full-sized image, when it downloads.

If I had to rework the accursed backgrounds on these
OSes, I'd be old and gray by now. I used my "convenience VM"
on this machine, to take some screenshots. And I don't
normally waste a lot of time making VMs "pretty" as part
of the setup.

I have one physical install on the other machine, where
the background is a bit better. But then I couldn't
take pictures of the control-alt-delete screen. (I'd have to
use a camera, which would suck.)

The blue in 1909 is abysmal.

Force restart by holding the power button down.

You're suggesting that a restart will solve my prolem(s)?

Yes, because some of these problems are caused by an "in-flight"
Windows Update which has broken one or more services (SVCHOST)
on the machine. Finishing a restart when requested, helps
clean up stuff like that.

The OS seems to be acquiring more curve balls as it ages.
For example, some Windows Update items, restart twice, one boot
cycle using a temporary profile rather than the regular
user account. Now, if you somehow managed to *stay* on
that temporary profile, all hell breaks loose.

Why Microsoft is doing some of these things, is unclear.
At one time, the design of Windows Update attempted to be
"bulletproof", by placing files needing changes in PendMoves
and flushing the stuff at shutdown/restart. Rather than
breaking things while the OS was still running.

I suspect some part of your OS was broken, while it was running.

And normally, multiple restarts cleans these up (on the assumption
that a Windows Update came in).

And while I could offer advice such as "check Windows Update
once in a while", that is *not* design intent! You're supposed
to be able to use this crap, like you were a human and not
a tech bro. Consequently, I will not be telling you that.
Being a nervous nellie is not the answer.

Works in Brave, Firefox and Pale Moon on my 3 PCs.

For myself, enlarging allows me to read the red message quite
comfortably but it is not a colour scheme that I would choose.
