Installing Home Premium over Pro?
 

I know this sounds weird, but I have a bad copy (MS had decided it does
not like the key) of Pro installed and I am trying to purchase a copy
that MS likes.

Pro is becoming hard to find from reputable resellers and I see that
NewEgg as Home Premium available. (actually, they have Pro too, but
there's some issue with corruptin on the .ISO per customer reviews).

I am wondering if there is a way to install Home Premium over top of my
existing Pro system without hosing the system... and then I could apply
the Premium productd key.

You do not need to reinstall pro, all you need is a valid key.

But you already have a working Pro installation, so presumably have an

ISTR there is a program around that can reset the registry keys that
determine your installation. This would enable your Pro to become
Premium, for the purposes of validation. Think I have a link

If you need Media, you can try the URL generator on heidoc.
The actual ISO downloads from Microsoft, and is related
to something called TechBench.

The tool needs a relatively modern system.

Internet Explorer 8 or newer.

The tool uses the HTML engine in the browser, and
needs that as part of the spoofing it does to
get the server to "let you in". That's why it
has a dependency on IE8. It might be using
ActiveX or something similar.

When it generates a URL, it has a "Copy to Clipboard" function.
Paste the URL into your favorite browser (doesn't have to
be IE8), and the download should be valid for 24 hours.

You can use this, if there is some problem with corrupt
media in a purchase you've made.

If you compute a SHA1 sum (using sha1sum or Microsoft fciv),
you can Google that to get some idea whether the downloaded
ISO is intact. Even a single byte wrong in the ISO, throws
off SHA1 or MD5.

I wouldn't let a report of corrupt media throw you off.
Do your download now, and if the new media looks good, go
make your purchase.

I don't think this is what he is talking about.
If the system says its corrupt the key, then it wont work.

What your telling him to do, is get a ISO downloader.
That just downloads ISO files, its not going to give him the right key.

What you can do Pete, is get a key finder, that may help you to find it,
if you can that is...

IF I were you, I would avoid it. The thing Paul has said. Just load up
the new op system, and let it tell you what to do. You may wish to do a
double boot system, choose it, you can even use BDR, then you can keep
the old op system and still get a new one loaded up.
Upon which at boot up, you choose which one to use each time.... We
have a machine with more than one op system inside. In that way, you
dont loose anything you already have, and can still work with a new op
system, to use a key finder to search the machine for the right key in
the drive. If you can find the right key that is, you can get around the
switch corrupt problem. And eliminate the problem itself. Plus, you then
have two op systems available to use.

The /one/ time I had a problem with a Newegg transaction they took care
of it.
