How to lower laptop display brightness
TOSHIBA Satellite A45 laptop and having trouble with the screen brightness
but I can't seem to get it down... the control keys are F6 to lower and F7 to increase which combined with the "FN" key should work (as far as I know), but they don't do a thing, the computer is a bit old but seems in great general condition so I doubt the keys themselves don't work, the video/graphics are strong and sharp, it doesn't make a difference if on power or battery. What do you folks think? wrong key combination, sequence or what else? Can't find information on the net for that model. Any suggestions? I would really appreciate some help. Thanks |

Thanks... I downloaded the owners manual from the link you provided and it
seems that the OS is missing a Toshiba application that should enable the keyboard shortcuts. Will try to find it. It runs an "install" that creates the folder C:\DOCS and puts the .pdf file under there. Are you holding DOWN the Fn key so it is active when you press the other function keys? Did you use the Fn-esse program to reassign keys to macro functions? Is it the laptop's screen that you are trying to dim? Or did you attach an external monitor? Are you using the laptop's keyboard when hitting the Fn key? Or did you attach a USB keyboard (which means the Fn key won't work)? When you press Fn+F11 to go into numeric keypad overlay mode, does the numeric mode light on the keyboard indicator panel come on? If not, could be the Fn key is defective. |

Unfortunately it's lacking the appropriate Control Panel applications from
Toshiba so there's no way to make the keys work, but for the meantime I've managed to set an adequate brightness level through the BIOS and the Extreeme Graphics hardware settings. After a more complete look at the owner's manual, it happens that it's not
only one but several Toshiba aplications that are missing, and yes quite a few drivers need updating, including the BIOS and chipset driver. The fact is, this was a relative's computer and someone did a clean installation from a regular XP CD so the Toshiba Control Panel applications were not reinstalled. So I will lookup the possibility of getting the Toshiba CD or at least try to find the Toshiba applications. In the meantime, I managed to lower the display brightness in the BIOS and the Intel's Extreeme Graphics settings. Thanks again.
