Missing shortcut icons can anybody confirm ?

Hi

I have a problem with some missing icons in all my file open dialogs

In Wordpad's open dialog I select to see all files *.*
and then I browse to this path:
C:\ProgramData\Microsoft\Windows\Start Menu\Programs\Accessories

In that folder there is: MsPaint, SoundRecorder etc.

But on my Window 7 64 sp1. five of those shortcuts are showing the default
program icon eg: SoundRecorder, Sticky Notes etc..
If I browse to the same path in the Shell all the correct icons are there.

Anybody know anything about this ?

Maybe even what to do about it ?

This is not about the editor, it is the same in all my file open dialogs
no matter what program I try.

I just gave the WordPad recipe so that anybody willing to try and confirm
could do so without to much trouble.

OK, I'm sorry I misunderstood. I thought you meant every time you use
WordPad's Open dialog :-)

I was about to suggest finding a tool to clear the icon cache, but
after a moment's thought, I believe that relates only to desktop icons.

I also just realized that you refer to the "Shell". That would imply to
me the Command Window (by analogy to its meaning in Unix), and there
are no icons there. Do you mean Windows Explorer?

Anyway, I just looked here (also Win 7 64-bit), and my icons are the
same in Windows Explorer as in WordPad's Open dialog. That verifies
that something is different about your system, but I have no idea what
would cause that. I wish I could help.

After pressing Send, I noticed Jeff Layman's post.

He points to a method to rebuild the icon cache, which also seems to
imply that my remark about Desktop icons is wrong. I hope the ideas in
that link (which I'm about to bookmark!) work.

Unfortunately that didn't fix my problem, but again there is nothing
wrong in the explorer, it is only in the file open dialogs.

Thanks for trying though.

When you are in Wordpad and you browse to the Accessories folder, if you right-click the icon
for the Sound Recorder and select 'Properties' and select the Shortcut tab you should see this
path in the Target:

%SystemRoot%\system32\SoundRecorder.exe

If you click on the 'Change Icon...' button you should see the same path
in the 'Look for icons in this file' box.
Below that should be the mic icon.
MsPaint has this path: %windir%\system32\mspaint.exe
Snipping Tool has this path: %windir%\system32\SnippingTool.exe
Is that what you see?

Yes.

I don't get the chance, because when I click "Change Icon" the system tells me
that it could not open C:\Windows\System32\SoundRecorder.exe.
Which of course, is not true, it should have said:
"Could not find any icons in C:\Windows\System32\SoundRecorder.exe".
Which is the case the programs that don't show icons, don't have their icons
in the exe file and I don't know in which file I can find those icons.

Below that should be the mic icon.

No, not if the system can't find it.

MsPaint has this path: %windir%\system32\mspaint.exe

MsPaint is fine, it have icons in it's exe file.

Snipping Tool has this path: %windir%\system32\SnippingTool.exe
Is that what you see?

Yes and No. I see the path but I don't see the icon.
Snipping Tool looks the same as SoundRecorder.

Thanks for trying

If all else fails, you can always try sfc /scannow to fix any system
files which have become corrupted (this was mentioned in the original link).
http://www.sevenforums.com/tutorials...e-checker.html

Hope it works.

What is the exact wording of the error message ?
Try Googling the exact phrase.

Thanks this looks interesting.

But sfc /verifyonly tells me that I have to be administrator in
order to use sfc.
I am administrator and the only user on my pc, how can I make
sfc see that ?

Thanks in advance.

Go to your start menu, click on "accessories", then right click on
"command prompt" & choose "run as administrator".

Thanks, I ran sfc /verifyonly, but it found no errors.

So I guess my win7 is just strange. :(
