It didn't get installed on this PC. I believe it's
on the CD. How do I install it? Thanks.

Still working this? Why don't you just get a 3rd party FAX program ...
Or standard Microsoft CD with XP.

Rob, I have SmithMicro HotFax. Like most, It
has its flaws. I have XP Pro CD. Thought I'd like
to try Microsoft's FAX capability. I tried what
was indicated in Microsoft Help & Support,
namely, Add/RemoveAdd/Remove Windows Prog.
FAX Services and it tells me to get some
fxzzzzzz.dll programs from i386. I seem to
recall (as I see you do) that that led to a
dead end last year.

Control Panel Add/Remove Programs Add/Remove Windows Components. Place a
check next to Fax Services and click Next. You may be prompted for the
WinXP CD. If you run into problems, direct the wizard to the i386 folder on
the CD.

Since I have customers who seem to want to send me faxen (which I wish
they didn't) I'm going to go buy myself one of those special
stand-alone fax machines. The kind that plug into the phone socket
without any computer connections. I'm doing this to eliminate the
hassle factor ...

I did this with my laptop, you use the add printer dialog + install CD. I'm
sure it's covered in the standard help files?

The prog. is pretty average, luckily I only have to use it an absolute
minimum.

3rd party software can't be any worse?

Thanks, Sharon. I think that's what I tried last year but it didn't
find the .dll files that presumably are in i386 on the CD.

direction. I just tried it with two different XP CDs.
It prompted, saying it needed file fxsevent.dll and
I browsed to i386 on the CD, and when I hit Enter, it
changed what was in my windows to \f\i386 or almost that,
but it never found the .dll file. Browsing on the CD I
find a zillion files starting ith fx .... and all with extension
..dl_ .....

Incidentally, I don't even have to go to Add/Remove etcetera.....
Just insertying the CD and waiting, its autorun starts it up
and gives me four choices, one of which is to Add Windows
Optional Components. That leads to the same impasse.

steps which didn't get that FAX installed last year. As a
scientist I'm curious as to why I follow the right steps
and get to where the 'uninstalled' .dl_ files are, and the
installer doesn't convert them to .dll files and install them.

I know I can buck it to the Microsoft insider Online Tech
support people, but I like to save that recourse for problems
that really *have* to be solved.

Yes, I believe that, Rob, but they refused to go any further than
instruct me to do the Ghost Reinstall. I did yhat on another
drive and still didn't get the FAX, so that's a dead end. It
seems to me that Microsoft should provide a download of the
FAX (like they did of Recovery Console) but I hate to bother
them via the Online Tech Support option./wbl/

the files it needs.....of which there will be
several, all starting with 'fx' and with .dll
extension. Do you have a website where you could
put files for me to download and install? /wbl/
