XP SP3
My dog was playing with my keyboard or mouse and now the text under my
icons seems to be reversed. It has the background color box under it
and it is transparent when selected. It was the other way. What option
fixes that.

Open "Control Panel", double-click "System", click on the "Advanced" tab
and in the "Performance" box, click "Settings". Then on the "Visual
Effects" tab, select "Custom", then find and uncheck "Use drop shadows
for icon labels on the desktop". Click "OK", then "OK" again.

Do you have any System Restore points ?

The setting might be stored in the Registry,
and the Registry files are in the Restore Point.

On WinXP, files outside your "My Documents" tree
are tracked. Say you normally keep Firefox downloads
in C:\Downloads instead of My Documents, then if you
use a Restore Point, any files gained or lost
in your Downloads, would be affected. If you downloaded
files "1" and "2" two days ago, and use a Restore Point
from three days ago, files "1" and "2" get erased. Copy
files like that to a safe place, before using the
Restore Point. Files kept in the "officially blessed"
parts of C: are unaffected, so nothing in My Documents
gets added or subtracted to match the way it was
three days ago.

I don't let much use "my documents". For some reason system restore
does not work on this machine. It goes through all the motions but
right at the end it says it is unable to restore. I guess I could load
an old C image but I thought this was a simple fix,.

I think there is a high contrast setting there too

This just seemed to swap "highlighted" with regular. I really do not
know what happened but my dog had the keyboard and mouse on the floor.

Acronis images the C: every Monday night and incremental more often
than that. All the more reason not to store "data" there. That is
pretty much all on other drives. C: is just software.
That way the data can be backed up with a simple copy and the stuff
that needs the Windows infrastructure gets imaged.

Better check for viruses, too. No telling what websites your dog
was visiting.

I wasn't in tinfoil-hat mode - just more surprised at the storage
involved. From what is said above, if you deleted a few feature films,
then unless you were storing them in an "officially blessed" area,
invoking a Restore Point would magically restore them; I was just
thinking that, if true, this implies a backup storage area as big as
your disc (or maybe half as big), which seems unlikely,

I only noticed this, when I lost a couple files
out of C:\Downloads after using System Restore.

If you use SR from normal OS mode, it's reversible.

If you do System Restore from Safe Mode, it cannot
be undone (do a backup first!).
