Installing WinXP MSN Gaming Zone games into Win 10
Is it possible? :) The standalone WinXP games can be installed ease. But I failed to find hints about installing those MSN games, notably Internet Hearts. -- @~@ Remain silent! Drink, Blink, Stretch! But at least they don't have SmartScreen tell you "this program does not run on this version of Windows." Unfortunately, that's correct (with major upgrades, not the in-between minor ones). But reinstalling it is quick and easy. Those games are a very minor thing to me, but nevertheless that's one of the things that ****es me off the most about Microsoft's attitude. |

It's impossible to modify signed content and get away with it. You need the signing key and signing software, which you would have to steal. If the signing method was "weak" enough, such as say the usage of MD5, then it could be cracked. Microsoft has moved to SHA-2 (SHA256) for signing Windows Updates now, so they take more care with signing than they used to. When content is not digitally signed, it can be hacked by people with the knowledge on how to do it. 16 bit content won't run on a 64 bit OS. And some people mistake the error message as indicating a "problem" with the EXE which doesn't actually exist. Instead, it's a message which is telling you that there is no WOW subsystem available to run 16 bit code on a 64 bit OS. To play old games, do a multiboot install, and put a 32 bit OS on the same machine as your 64 bit OS. Then you can play your old old games there. This is getting harder to do, as NVidia no longer creates brand new 32 bit drivers for Windows. You would have to use a driver which is at least a couple years old now. Paul |

This software is all about 2 decades old (or more), unless you're talking about a recycled 16-bit InstallShield for a 32-bit app. AFAIK, 16-bit was essentially deprecated on Windows in 1995, though companies still wrote stuff for MS-DOS before NT4 and the DirectX HAL (for games, display and sound) hit. But both WIN-G and the GDL sucked, after all. 16-bit was gone almost entirely a few years later, and good riddance to preemptive multitasking tying up your entire machine with a crash. Ah, memories. I don't blame them for calling it quits, but it wasn't impossible. They could have ported it to 64-bit. They just couldn't recycle the 32-bit code to do it, and they'd be running the WOW layer on top of the WOW64 layer, which is a bit too Frankenstein for good sense. So why do it at all? It is a good question. But Windows XP games like he's talking about are 32-bit and 64-bit, and WinAero is pretty trustworthy AFAIK. The core Zone games were ported to Win 7 x64. That's where WinAero got them from, and before that you'd have to hack them in a hex editor yourself. A lot of XP games will run on Windows 10, but, excepting the WinAero package, it's advisable you don't put them in the Program Files (x86) directory.
