Thanks for any help. Make sure the file associations in Windows and in Firefox are set to your PDF reader. I have been using Firefox on Windows 10 since it came out and Firefox since the Netscape days. While in recent version Firefox handle PDF files and Adobe Reader differently I can still click on a PDF link and have the PDF file open. -- 2017: The year we learn to play the great game of Euchre |

Thanks for any help. For Firefox version 57.0.1 with Windows 10 version 1709, in the case where you are opening .pdf files which are on your own hard drive, do both 1.x and 2.x below. 1. Follow these steps to tell Firefox to open PDF files itself instead of sending them to another application. 1.1 In Firefox, go to "Tools Options General" 1.2 Scroll down to the section "Applications". You will see a search box in this section. 1.3 In this search box, enter this: Portable Document Format 1.4 Look for the row which has "Portable Document Format (PDF)" in column "Content Type". 1.5 For this one row, change the drop-down in column "Action" to say "Preview in Firefox". NOTE: The row which has "PDF file" is not the row to change. 2. Follow these steps to tell Windows that PDF files should be opened with Firefox: 2.1 In Windows, go to "Start Settings Apps Default Apps" 2.2 Scroll down and click on "Choose default applications by file type". Wait for the page to load. 2.3 Scroll down to find the .pdf extension. 2.4 Click on the application icon to the right of .pdf, and select Firefox from the pop-up. -- Kind regards Ralph 🦊 |

I checked my applications and I do not have a application entry Portable Document Format Even though I have several entries for Adobe Reader. Try dragging and dropping a local PDF file onto the open window of Firefox. With the settings I showed, it should preview in Firefox. You would probably have to make a custom file association, to get File-Explorer-launched PDFs to end up in Firefox. And it's not hard to do. Option 8 here. Note that Windows likes to flip these back, so bookmark this for later. https://www.tenforums.com/tutorials/...dows-10-a.html Option Eight: Right click Start, use Run box, enter: control /name Microsoft.DefaultPrograms /page pageFileAssoc Scroll down and look for PDF. Select the entry. Look for an application to replace Microsoft Edge, which is the current owner (if you don't have Adobe Acrobat or a third-party reader). I had to switch to looking in Program Files (x86) to find Firefox. And I clicked on the firefox.exe when in there. If it worked, when you go back to a File Explorer window, all your PDF files will have a Firefox Icon (which isn't very cool, but... whatever). And note that the URL "about:config" can show you whether the in-box PDF handler is enabled or not. It can be disabled in about:config, if you've been screwing around before with this for some reason. So if it still doesn't work, check the Configuration Editor in Firefox. I think PDF has to be in the file extension list, in order that Microsoft Edge can "hog it". So I cannot see Microsoft removing it entirely from the extension list. Because they're pretty proud of themselves adding a PDF viewer to Microsoft Edge. (The so-called TwinUI viewing option, that steals the PDF from Firefox :-) ) As a user, the complexity of this issue, hints that you're a victim of software companies at war with one another. And all these "petty stealing things" are part of that. These tools don't all need PDF viewers, and they could have put a separate application to view PDFs if they wanted. And actually done a good job. Paul |
