Problem - dialog box is open error W10/MSWord 2003

I need help. This AM, i suddenly began getting the following nag
every time I open a .doc file. I am using MSOFFICE Word 2003.

The command cannot be performed because a dialog box is open. Click
OK, and then close open dialog boxes to continue.

I tried searching for helps, but can only find sites wanting to sell
something. Can someone tell me the steps to get rid of this
irritating problem? For that matter - just what started this?

Thanks

Very bad news indeed. Archaic products does cost a lot of money to get
support for.

It is the same here. So tell us what is your budget to solve this
problem on your archaic product?

Can someone tell me the steps to get rid of this
irritating problem?

Sure we can give you step by step assistance here for your archaic
product. What's your budget for this?

For that matter - just what started this?

Could be the level of your intelligence. Perhaps try upgrading it!!.

Thanks

Exit MS Word. Look in Task Manager's Processes/Details tab. As I
recall, the process name for MS Word is 'winword.exe'. Make sure there
are no remnant instances of that process after exit MS Word. Then first
open MS Word, and then use its File - New menu to open the document.
Exit MS Word, and use File Explorer to double-click on a .doc file to
see if it opens okay in MS Word.

If that doesn't help, load MS Word (but not by loading a document) and
go into its settings. Disable any add-ons you installed, and retest.

Load Windows 10 into its safe mode, and then test using MS Word.

As I recall, Office 2003 is too old to be compatible with Windows 10
(and probably Windows 7 & 8). Office 2010 (excluding Starter edition)
is the oldest version of Office that is compatible with Windows 10.
Old Office versions might work, might require a compatibility mode, or
some components (e.g., Outlook) might not work correctly or not at all.

i tried Libre Ofice Writer Version: 6.1.6.3 (x64), and it seems to
work okay on same docs. I'll stick to that until I find out how to
fix the problem,
Thanks

I thought I had a good idea - I uninstalled MSWord 2003, then
reinstalled it. I thought a fresh install would do it. Nada. Still
does the same.
I tried.

There is a tool in the Windows WDK (including the
Windows 10 one) called "inspect.exe". And it gives
details on every window and dialog on the screen.

In this contrived example, my copy of LibreOffice doesn't
have Java installed. At startup, before the regular LO
window appears, it throws up a dialog. The dialog isn't
particularly anonymous, and you can see already, what limits
"inspect.exe" has.

https://i.postimg.cc/cJ6xYQ8s/inspec...10-WDK-kit.gif

Now, while the desktop is running, the "inspect.exe"
window hops around a lot. It makes it virtually impossible
to stage, and then shoot a picture of it with screenshot,
before the display changes. I had to shoot video of the
damn screen, to get some pictures to work with.

Still, if you had something that registered as a dialog
box, you would expect "inspect.exe" to list it. Even if
the details are (in classic Windows style), completely
devoid of the fields a dialog is supposed to have
filled out. That's the problem with even suggesting
this method, is I really don't expect to catch useful
info with it.

But I have to pass it along, to show what a developer
might use.

Shows the window title, process and program and owns that window, and
lots of other info (that probably is unimportant to you).

I too am using Office 2003 (Word, Excel, and Outlook) (Pro version). Happy
to say, I haven't run into that error.
Like Boris, I also did a search
https://www.google.com/search?source=hp&ei=qfbsXfSvLuSW_QaSwJf4CQ&q=offic e+word+2003+The+command+cannot+be+performed+becaus e+a+dialog+box+is+open&oq=office+word+2003+The+com mand+cannot+be+performed+because+a+dialog+box+is+o pen&gs_l=psy-ab.3...14916.23762..25947...0.0..0.233.1724.17j1j1 ....2..0....1j2..gws-wiz.....6..0i362i308i154i357j0i131j0j0i22i30..1000 1%3A0%2C154.5GgAuI6k2L4&ved=0ahUKEwi0qJ-2kKbmAhVkS98KHRLgBZ8Q4dUDCAc&uact=5

That may have narrowed it down some, but there are still too many hits
(~24,000,000) to make looking through them viable.

Do you have all of the Office service packs and updates installed? Some of
them are compatibility updates.

Instead of uninstalling and reinstalling, do a repair installation of Word:
Open Control PanelPrograms and Features. Highlight Word 2003 (or Office
2003 if you have the suite) and click on Repair at the top of the list.
Follow the prompts. You may need the installation CD.

If that doesn't work, search for Winword.exe. Right-click on it and pick
"Run as Administrator". Do you still see the error? (That was one of the
suggestions that worked from answers.microsoft.com)

Do you have any other Office products installed? If so, do they all work OK?
Good luck :-)

So, when you got the message that Word still had a dialog open, you
didn't see more than 1 window listed for winword.exe in WinLister? The
point wasn't how much information is provided by WinLister, but if you
could see there was more than one window opened by Word.

Nope. Running it now. Only issue I have is with every new iteration of
Windows 10 I have to open my first script-embedded Excel spreadsheet as
administrator in order to re-confirm acceptance of my scripting cert.

Outlook 2003, too? That's the component of Office 2003 that I've read
that has problems on Windows 10.

Maybe, if you use any signed scripts and have your macro security
setting set to high.
