OT hardware? Will usb hotspot run off of a charger?

OT Harware?

I have a USB hotspot, previous generation, only $10, that is meant to be
plugged into the USB port on a computer.

Do you think it would work if just plugged into a charger?

It's hard for me to test because I'd have to take the voice/data sim out
of my phone to use that sim. And fTM, can I use voice/data, or does it
have to be data-only?

I tried to test this thing when I was in Europe but the computer wanted
a coupld numbers and I didn't prepare and didn't know what they were. I
also don't know, Had I entered them, wouuld they have stayed there to
allow me to run off of a charger, or were they to be stored in the
laptop?

There are battery powered hotspots that dont' require a computer, so
maybe mine doesn't either.

Part number ?

I can't guarantee having a part number will help
answer the question, but it's a start.

Well, when I went to look at it, I'd put it back in its box, which says
"laptop, PC or Mac". So I guess that answers my own question.

I was trying to answer someone else's convoluted question, and I didn't
know if he had a PC with him while traveling or not. Because if he had
a laptop, why would he want the big heavy hotspot he pointed to.

Interesting, the box says HSPA in two places but when I plugged it in,
Windows said wasa HSUPA.

Also says 3.75G Wireless Modem,

These are the lines I don't understand:

HSUPA/HSDPA/WCDMA-850/1900/2100 (Optional)
GSM/GPRS/EDE 850/900/1800/1900
....
Memory T-Flash up to 8G

No screen popped up this time but maybe because there is no sim in it.

I didnt' buy it from Walmart but here it is:
https://www.walmart.com/ip/7-2Mbps-U...work/223415214
I think I bought it when my phone didn't have hotspot.

The first thought that comes to mind, is for
it to be autonomous, it would have to do this.

3G-antenna ------ dongle modem/router ----- Wifi 2.4GHz
|
+--------- USB NDIS interface

If the laptop wasn't running, then there would be nothing
to talk to the USB. But the hotspot could still serve Wifi
to the LAN side.

I'm not sure it does that, because I don't see mention of Wifi.

If it only consists of this part

3G-antenna ------ dongle modem/router
|
+--------- USB NDIS interface

then the laptop will have to be running, for the thing to log in.

I found a driver example on catalog.update.microsoft.com ,
and the driver consists of two parts.

;goes into [HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Contro l\Class\{4D36E972-E325-11CE-BFC1-08002BE10318}\0013]
;HKR, Ndi\Interfaces, LowerRange, 0, "wlan,ethernet"
;HKR, Ndi\params, EmulateNdis62, 0x00010001, 1 ;enable WWan NDIS 6.2
;
;HKR, Ndi\params, DefGwMac, 0, "02-80-37-EC-02-81"
;HKR, Ndi\params, ModuleMac,0, "02-80-37-EC-02-00"
;HKR, Ndi\params, HardwareRadioSwitch, 0, 2 ;1 = Can the radio be disabled trough a switch, 2 = set switch on at load
;HKR, Ndi\params, SoftwareRadioSwitch, 0, 1 ;1 = set switch on at load
;HKR, Ndi\params, SoftwareRadioSim, 0, 1 ;1 = set switch on at load
;HKR, Ndi\params, EmulateNdis62, 0, 1 ;enable WWan NDIS 6.2 on a eth frame module
;HKR, Ndi\params, GlobalDebugLevel, 0, 7 ;the drive log level 1 = low, DBG_ERROR = 7
;HKR, Ndi\params, ProviderID, 0, ""
;HKR, Ndi\params, ManualNetworkSelection, 0, 0
;HKR, Ndi\params, WwanDataClass, 0x10001, 1
;HKR, Ndi\params, IsF3507g, 0x10001, 0
;HKR, Ndi\params, ProvisionedAccessString, 0, ""
;HKR, Ndi\params, ProvisionedUserName, 0, ""
;HKR, Ndi\params, ProvisionedPassword, 0, ""
;HKR, Ndi\params, ProvisionedProviderId, 0, ""
;HKR, Ndi\params, ContextId, 0x10001, 0
;HKR, Ndi\params, ContextType, 0x10001, 0
;HKR, Ndi\params, ProvisionedCompression, 0x10001, 0
;HKR, Ndi\params, ProvisionedAuthType, 0x10001, 0

It refers to a username and password, as if perhaps it was
doing PPP. Yet, it also mentions "EmulateNdis62", which
would be something like Windows 7 Ethernet might use. You
would think the SIM would be sufficient to authenticate,
but maybe the SIM just arranges the transport, and the
session has another layer of protection and authentication.

I don't see it being autonomous, unless I can find some
evidence that it's also a Wifi thing.

The other driver kind it's got, is a HID one. Which is the
same class that a mouse or keyboard would use.

"H5321 gw HID Driver" = MbmFirstEnum_Inst, USB\VID_0BDB&Pid_191A

Nice, mysterious stuff...

So what I was using there, was not a driver for your exact
device, but a driver for a "similar" device. I think being
something an ISP might provide, they try to hide branding.
You could always try Device Manager and Properties and
Details and look at HardwareID and similar things. To get
some hints of at least what chip is used.

looks like a typical usb data stick, which requires a computer like the
box states.
