stopping "shortcut to..." from being included automatically with each shortcut

I just reinstalled XP and I can't remember how to stop the the text "Short
cut to..." from showing up in front of each short cut I create. How can I
get this to stop?

Now is a great time to point you to one of the easiest ways to find
information on problems you may be having and solutions others have found:

Search using Google!
http://www.google.com/
(How-to: http://www.google.com/intl/en/help/basics.html )

Specific example...

A seach like this:
http://www.google.com/search?q=stop+...2Windows+XP%22

Might lead to:
http://www.generation-nt.com/us/answ...-92831852.html

Where it tells you to use TweakUI, specifically "It's one of the choices
under Explorer. Uncheck the box "Prefix 'Shortcut to' on new shortcuts." "

Come back, reply to this conversation and let everyone know (for
posterity/future searches) if this worked for you.

Tim Meddick March 15th 10 09:23 PM

stopping "shortcut to..." from being included automatically with each shortcut

To stop the words "Shortcut To..." from appearing before the title of each new
shortcut you create, either ;

1). Open regedit and locate the value :

[HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Windows\Curre ntVersion\Explorer]
"Link"=hex:00,00,00,00

...and delete this value completely. To "undo" (return the added "Shortcut To...")
reverse the procedure and create the [dword] value "Link" and assign it a value of
00,00,00,00 under the same key (above).

or...

2). Download the [small & free] program from Microsoft called TweakUI.exe by
clicking on the link below.

You will find the option to "uncheck" a box labelled "Prefix "Shortcut to" on new
shortcuts" under the heading "Explorer" in TweakUI.exe - uncheck it and you will have
no more "Shortcut To..."

Download the small TweakUI installation file from :

http://download.microsoft.com/downlo...ertoySetup.exe

Thanks for reminding me about Tweak UI, it worked like a charm.
