Is there a way to get rid of these browser boxes?

A win7 question but I included win10 in case it happens there too and
because I think a lot of win7 experts now only read win10.

If I pass the cursor over a Firefox or Edge section of my task bar, a
box an inch high with a list of all the Firefox or Edge windows pops up
and stays sometimes for a long while. Other programs like Solitaire,
Eudora, Forte Agent don't do this, though they may pop up an unobtrusive
non-annoying tool tip.

Is there a way to get rid of these browser boxes?

It's not just browsers, almost all programs show the thumbnail(s) of the
window(s) that process has open, I suspect it's only programs that
pre-date win7 that don't do it?

AFAIK, no way to disable the thumbnails.

At least I know what they are called now. Hard to google for "those
little boxes". I plan to let you know wha t I find.

These browser boxes (Jumplist) are available on any executable icon
whether in the start bar, or on the task bar.

It can be turned on (or off) by going to the Options, Personalization,
Start, It is in the bottom of the first section.
"Show recently opened items in the Start menu and the taskbar"

Since I think the best thing in Windows 10 is the Jumplist, I have never
tried to turn it off.

Microsoft has removed the setting to disable that feature since Windows 7.
So, that setting which is accessible from the Group Policy, is only
applicable for Windows Vista.

But there is a way to workaround the unwanted feature. There's a setting
which defines the delay before showing the taskbar thumbnail. You can
increase the delay to a very large value. Check the instruction in below web
page. (warning: long URL)

https://answers.microsoft.com/en-us/windows/forum/all/disable-taskbar-thumbnail-preview/28e025af-6bb0-4f98-8df9-50693cc1e3c5#threadSummaryAnswersSection

Note: there may be a limit of how long the delay can be, but the actual
effective maximum value is unknown. If there's none, it would be the maximum
value of a DWORD type, which is 4,294,967,295ms or 49.7 days (1000ms = 1
second).

I don't think Micky means the jumplists (you need to right-click to see
those) But JJ's suggestion does work and should effectively turn the
thumbnails off with a suitable delay value ...

See the other suggestions, but also: in Taskbar properties, do you have
Taskbar buttons set to Never combine, Combine when taskbar is full, or
Always combine, hide labels? And, when using a browser, do you tend to
open several windows, rather than using tabs?

[I (a) use tabs in browsers and (b) have my taskbar set to Never
combine, so this doesn't bother me. I just wondered if you had multiple
browser windows open (which you probably wouldn't do with Solitaire,
Eudora {blast from the past department!}, or Agent), combined with one
of the combine options - in which case Windows has only this way to let
you select (to be "Restored") the one you want.]

Get WinAero Tweaker (just be sure you understand a tweak before applying
it, since some can change behavior that you really want).

https://winaero.com/

After installation, load WinAero Tweaker and enter "taskbar" in the
search box. Select the "Taskbar thumbnails" search hit. You can enable
or disable the thumbnails, change their timeout, etc. Have fun.

This makes a registry change. As JJ pointed out, this option became a
policy; however, all Windows policies are registry entries. Microsoft
even provides an Excel spreadsheet listing the policies and their
matching registry entries. A tweaker makes it easier than drilling
through a spreadsheet and using regedit.

Yes as VanguardLH said WinAero Tweaker is the easy way to do it and
literally dozens of other neat things to improve Windows.

Thanks for that. I've always found the thumbnails to be annoying, but not
so much that I wanted to expend any effort toward removing them. Since I
already use Winaero Tweaker, the fix was simple. Thanks again.

Windows and tabs both. This box in quest4ion just had a list of the
currently showing tab in each window. The same list showed up above
each task bar entry. It was not useful because I did have it set to
Never Combine and I coudl see the taskbar entry for each window, didn't
need a shorter way to get to it.

7+ Taskbar Tweaker took care of things, and has a few other options too
I have not yet looked at. I'll look at aero tweaker too.

Thanks all.

This works with both win7 and win10. And has other good features now,
like adjusting the volume with the scroll wheel when the cursor is over
the task bar or the notification area.

Several grouping and combining options too, and the aability to display
seconds in the digital clock.

Thanks all.

As Andy Burns posted, you can't get rid of them, but you can delay the time
it takes to pop up. Using this reg file, you can delay it to 100 seconds:
======
Windows Registry Editor Version 5.00

[HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Windows\Curre ntVersion\Explorer\Advanced]
"ExtendedUIHoverTime"=dword:000186a0
======

Copy everything between the equal signs, save as a .reg file
(ThumbnailDelay.reg, or whatever), right-click on it and select "Merge".

I'm assuming you mean the box that pops up after you hover your cursor over
the item in the task bar, and not the info one that pops up for a second or
two. If it's the 2-second-box, I got nothing :-)
