Cannot update, BITS and Windows update corrupted

The title says it all.

Have tried MS Hot Fix but no luck.

In services Windows Update is missing and BITS shows @%SystemRoot%.

Have run MSE virus scan and Spywareblaster. Also ran Malwarebytes with
Chameleon (which is supposed to kill malicious software prior to scan).

All 3 above give a clean bill of health!

I see various "fixes" on the net but only the Hot Fix from MS.

Any known fixes that work?

Would appreciate advice on this.

Go to "Control Panel", "Automatic Updates" and make sure that it is enabled.
Also, please be advised that the Windows update service name is "Automatic Updates".

Thanks for the advice, Ben.

Seems I was not alone. Apparently the October cumulative update for IE8
messed up BITS for many people. I managed to get mine sorted by various
registry hacks I came across when searching.

Current advice seems to be to Google for the direct download of the November
cumulative Security Update for Internet Explorer 8 for Windows XP
(KB2888505).

People are reporting that after install BITS and auto updating are fixed.

This is the direct download link for the November IE8 update:

http://www.microsoft.com/en-us/downl....aspx?id=41074

I'm assuming that IE8 is the only version affected but presumably if people
have the same problem and are running a different version of IE, then
obviously they should Google for the relevant direct download.
