!!!mp3's play poorly!!!

all types of audio files play just fine on my computer
except for mp3s. for some reason or another, mp3s play,
but play with some skipping and scratchy/distorted
noises. and these media files are on the computer, not
on a cd. my sound card has current drivers and no irq
conflicts. i tried reinstalling the codecs for windows
media player (8.0) and that didnt help. also tried
playing it in real one player and that didn't make a
difference. i am really out of ideas, i tried reducing
hardware acceleration and sample rate and that didn't do
anything either. very frustrating!!! please help, thanks

ps, these are not mp3s i encoded or made myself, they
were downloaded from kazaa. but also, even the sample
music in windows media player ("like humans do")or the
stuff that starts playing when you open real one doesnt
work so its not that the mp3s themselves are messed up,
its something with my settings or hardware. sheesh

have you installed any new sound codecs or directshow filters? they can be
conflicting and causing the problem, It happened to me after i installed
Nemo codec pack and installed everything in the pack before i realized what
I was doing, I uninstalled a directshow filter (not sure which one) and mp3s
played fine. worth investigation...
