How frequently should Windows 10 be rebooted
 

Hi,

I try to avoid rebooting, by closing the lid of my notebook into sleep
mode. However after a long time (a few days) things stop working, like
Task Manager fails to display WiFi stats. So I close and open it and it
works properly again. Maybe there is something wrong with my hardware. I
have never done memtest, I don't know how. Maybe a cosmic ray might
change a bit, but I live at sea level. On occasion my machine will
freeze up or reboot spontaneously.

To be on the safe side, how frequently should Windows 10 be rebooted?

Don't know what the issue is - I live at 4500 feet and never have a
problem. Currently six computers - desktops, netbooks, chromebooks go
several months between reboots.

quad core. For eight years I have been using a 3 drive RAID 0 storage
array. It stays steady for months no complaint. I use it as my main server.

I observed that after the quad core upgrade, there were fewer errors
shown in the Event Viewer. That is understandable because when I
purchased the Acer desktop Vista-32 was installed. Now it runs Win-7
64-bit better than my Acer Win-10 64-bit notebook. I purchased it less
than a year ago with Win 8.1 installed and now there have been two
upgrades of Win10. I try to insure device drivers are upgraded. The
Event Viewer shows a lot of errors. Maybe the quality of free OS is
less. As a disabled person I have some entitlement to Microsoft product
keys and the Win7 Enterprise is commercial grade. The Win10 is a Home
edition. I have contemplated whether I should try to purchase a
commercial grade of Win10. Win10 Home is a bit crippled, e.g. Remote
Desktop into it is not supported.

All the upgrades have been over Wifi and maybe some bit somewhere got
clobbered.

Acer Bloatware. Acer Care Center is hung and I need to reboot.

Maybe someone with a similar experience could offer advice.

First thing I would try is a cold reboot, Then run decrapifier to get
rid of some of the crap.

I have two Windows 10 machines being used as low volume servers. I
never reboot either one except when a reboot is required for updates.
I have had no issues with either one. But then again, updates have
happened at least monthly and sometimes much more often.

I don't think it really matters.
I dualboot win 10 and Linux mint sometimes 4 or 5 times a day, Some days
not at all, Don't see any difference especially with SSDs.

I will offer the other side of the question.

I shut my computers down every time I am done with them. With a cold
start every time I need the computer, I avoid all of the problems with
accumulated errors and memory leaks that occur when the computer is on
constantly.

Since these computers are all on my local LAN, they can be accesses or
access the LAN when ever needed. If the computer is on it can be
hacked. A Computer that is turned off, and can not be started from the
LAN, can not be hacked. It is the most secure computer in the world. So
since mine are turned off, my exposure and need for virus protection is
just a few hours per day that I use the computer.

Perhaps I didn't make it clear, but that's what I meant. It doesn't
hurt to reboot, but there's never a time when you *should*.

Maybe after doing your Upgrade Install to get the digital entitlement
key on the Microsoft server, you should follow up with a Clean Install
done using a Win10 download-able ISO and associated DVD. Discs such
as 10240 and 10586 should be available.

A clean install, will remove every aspect of "Acer". I did
a clean install on my Win7 laptop, to send all the Zynga games
to the abyss. That's faster than removing "cruft" by hand.

Win10 Insider prompts for reboots often enough,
you'll never set any "Uptime" records.

There is no reboot nor reinstall requirement or recommendations like in
the early days of Windows. if "things" stop working after a few days,
then something is wrong. Find out what and fix it. Your system
shouldn't require reboots except during updates. Hopefully, one day,
that will be a thing of the past. It is now with some other OSes.
