Windows XP and WIndows 2000
-----Original Message----- I am trying to network a WIN2000 and WINXP system. I would like to use WINXP box as host. I have tried for several days now and cannot get them to work. Can anyone lend a hand or send me in the right direction. Thanks in advance... . There may be some missing protocols which can be installed from such as NETBEUI and NW Link which you can get to in Network Connections and the click on Configure and Properties. Linksys (www.linksys.com) has some good step- by-step support articles. I have worked through the problem of joining an XP workgroup from a Win 2K machine only to be faced y a larger, and seemingly insoluble, problem. My Win 2k machine belongs to a Domain which is required to log onto a remote server. Under the Configuration menu that I mentioned above, there is a feature for Computer Name, where you can change from a Domain to a Workgroup. I did this and was completely locked out prior to logon to Win 2K, i.e., the user name no longer appeared and the password was inoperable. The XP workgroup machines show up under Entire Network in Network and Dial Up in Control Panel, but when I try to access or add a Printer, there is the pop- up. "\\'workgroup computer name' is inaccessible. There are no log on servers to facilitate the connection." I mainly want to share a printer and do not need to be in the Domain and the workgroup simultaneously. But I believe that if I create another user with a new profile and the change the Domain to a Workgroup, this will again lock the computer out of the Domain which willl require the account to be reset on the server. I would appreciate any ideas for a work around. |

When changing from Domain to Workgroup you need to have a local account
(account on the PC) with administrator rights. You can logon as administrator if you know the password. As far as Protocols the only one you need is TCP/IP with NetBIOS enabled. If you take yourself out of the domain then you are locked out because you no longer get authenticated by the Domain Controller. Login with an account that has admin rights and add a local account that is the same Username and Password as your Domain network account. As far as accessing your local network on a workgroup try not taking your laptop out of the Domain and see if you local network is accessible. To get to the printer try this: When connected to the local network (not work domain) go to Start/Run and type the name or IP address of the computer with the printer hooked to it. ex \\computername or \\192.168.0.1 You must have the 2 backslashes in front. When you click OK it should open a folder with the shared resources on that PC. If you can see the printer, double click and you should be able to install it on the laptop. Let us know if you run into problems. wrote in message ... -----Original Message----- I am trying to network a WIN2000 and WINXP system. I would like to use WINXP box as host.
