Slow Printing using Windows XP

Looking for any help in speeding up the printing on windows xp using a DOS
based program. I have windows nt and the program prints fast with no issue.
When I try and print from the same dos based program on the xp the printing
is very-very slow. Does anyone out there have any idea's why??

What printer make and model, and driver are you using?
I'm afraid that with each successive version of windows, the printer and
other hardware keeps getting farther and farther away from the application.
There are some things that might be done to speed things up, but they can be
dependent on the printer and driver software.
