DEFAULT:
Turn off the display 10 minutes
Put the computer to sleep 30 minutes
Change to:
Turn off the display Never
Put the computer to sleep Never
Sleep allow hybrid sleep = Off
Change advanced power settings (note 0 means never).
Note: Sleep stores in RAM what Hibernate stores in "Hiberfile.sys".

Periodically restore and backup your system so you continuously build on
a clean installation without ever getting it dirty.

Is this an M2N78LA motherboard ?

It apparently loses the ability to detect SATA drives,
as part of some failure issue.

HP made an announcement at the time, that there was a higher than
normal failure rate, and they extended the warranty by one year
for flavors of M2N78LA.

The chips is Geforce 9100. I couldn't find a diagram but it
sounds suspiciously like a 6100/6150 kind of approach. They
call it "chipset", but it might just be one 40W NB/SB chip
that has both a GPU and the SATA ports, all in one chip.
The chip should have at least a 40mm fan on it, just for
appearances (since there's no way a 40mm fan can cool a
40W chip). The 40W was the spec for the chip, that I could
find.

The memory is hosted by the Phenom, so the memory sticks
aren't off the chipset chip.

Using a graphics card, may cause the chipset to run cooler.

This smells kinda like the NVidia failing BGA problem, the
lack of a proper underfill on the BGA. But I don't know what
year that happened. OK, it took a few searches but the
issue showed around 2007/2008 or so. Suspicious.
