Action Center/update messages - can I suppress?

In my tray area, there's a flag: if I click on it, I get a popup saying

1 message

Change Windows Update settings

Open Action Center

[strange: "message" really does have a lower case first letter, as does
"settings". I thought Microsoft always Put Capital Letters On
Everything, so this is a refreshing change! Anyway that's by the by ...]

If I open Action Center, I see I have "Windows Update is set to check
with you before downloading and installing updates." Which is fine:
that's what I want; I have no desire (nor intention) to change it.

There is also a clickable "Turn off messages about Windows update".
However I _do_ want the popups that appear when updates are _available_:
if I click that, will I no longer get those? I just, ideally, would like
the flag to not appear in my tray when the only entry in it is "Change
Windows Update settings", but still get the popups when there are any.
Is this a forlorn hope?

I know I'm better off than most 10 users ("You VILL take updates! Haha!"
with fiendish cackle), but still ... (-:

In Action Center settings page, there are two notification message types:
security and maintenance. Disable the security ones and enable the
maintenance ones.

I see:
Security messages
[]Windows Update []Spyware and related protection
[]Internet security []User Account Control
[]Network Firewall []Virus protection
Maintenance messages
[]Windows Backup []Check for updates
[]Windows Troubleshooting

all have a tick at the moment.

Which one are you suggesting I untick, so that I don't see the flag when
it still wants me to "Change Windows Update settings" (which I have no
intention of doing), but still get a popup when there are updates
available?

I have Security, Windows Update 'Currently not monitored', but still
receive messages when Updates are available.

Probably should have replied more fully ...
Security, Windows Update Not selected
Maintenance, Check for updates Selected

As above, this stops W7 beefing about my Windows update settings, but
alerts me when updates are available, so I can choose whether or not to
download & install them.

Thanks! I've unticked that; will see.
