Can a Macintosh person tell us how to change the name of a file?
I don't know anything about changing names of files on Macintosh! :( Today I asked an emergency question on the rec.autos.tech newsgroup (the question is below) which has an MP4 uploaded to a web style forum which only accepts small PDFs (less than 12MB). I easily used Windows Shotcut freeware to convert the ~50 MB MP4 video to just ~5MB (simply by changing the pixels to 640x480) and then uploaded the much smaller files "as a fake PDF" by changing the name from file.mp4 to file.mp4.pdf instead. The Windows users had no problem changing the name but all the Macintosh users complained they can't change the name and I can't tell them HOW to change the name. It's really important that I get these Macintosh users to hear the file! Can a Macintosh person tell us how to change the name of a file? Whatever you write, I will cut and paste into the web forum thread.! Thanks!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! ================================================== =============== Here is the original post to the rec.autos.tech newsgroup https://groups.google.com/forum/#!forum/rec.autos.tech ================================================== =============== https://groups.google.com/d/msg/rec.autos.tech/uicX1l6oO_U/zzAfaVfSBQAJ Subject: Have you ever heard THIS SOUND inside your engine? URL: http://www.bimmerfest.com/forums/showthread.php?t=1181089 Nobody on Bimmerfest knows what is causing this noise and I can't use the car until I figure out how to figure out what the noise is. This only started after I did some work this weekend on the valve cover but it sounds like someone left a socket inside the engine and it's bouncing around somewhere. I'm pretty sure I didn't leave anything inside where this sounds like it's in the intake manifold but it's hard to figure out where it's coming from as it's intermittent. It sounds like it's coming from the top of the engine somehow but it's hard to place where. You should not need a login to read that thread and download the videos. http://www.bimmerfest.com/forums/attachment.php?attachmentid=730369&d=1513035084 Here's just an audio file: http://www.bimmerfest.com/forums/attachment.php?attachmentid=730353&d=1513034666 When you download them, remove the *pdf which I added so that the MP4 would look like a PDF to the forum upload GUI. I can't imagine what is making that noise which is why I'm asking you for how to debug that noise. Thanks! |

Whatever you write, I will cut and paste into the web forum thread.! Thanks!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Easy. On a Mac, you select the file, and hit Return. That activates the file name for editing. When you remove '.pdf' from the name and hit Return again, the Finder will ask if you really want to change the file name extension and offer you the option of using '.mp4' or '.pdf'. If the file name extensions are hidden, then you can use "Get Info" from the Finder's File menu to do it instead. ================================================== =============== Here is the original post to the rec.autos.tech newsgroup https://groups.google.com/forum/#!forum/rec.autos.tech ================================================== =============== https://groups.google.com/d/msg/rec.autos.tech/uicX1l6oO_U/zzAfaVfSBQAJ Subject: Have you ever heard THIS SOUND inside your engine? I'll give your the benefit of the doubt and assume that by "all the Macintosh users" you actually mean "one or two Macintosh users". Tell them to go to Finder-Preferences-Advanced and make sure 'show all filename extensions' is checked. If they can't figure it out from there, they're on their own. You can look at the web forum thread for yourself to see that the Macintosh users are telling me in the PM that the file shows up as "file.PDF." so I can only tell you what they told me. Same with the Usenet group Macintosh users. Web forum: Have you ever heard THIS SOUND inside your engine? http://www.bimmerfest.com/forums/showthread.php?t=1181089 Usenet group: https://groups.google.com/d/msg/rec.autos.tech/uicX1l6oO_U/zzAfaVfSBQAJ I will put the help above into the web forum and the Usenet group, where in both cases, the Macintosh users couldn't read the files and they are very different users overall. They're engine experts. Not Macintosh experts. Thanks for the help. If it works, the web forum and Usenet newsgroup should soon show that the Macintosh users can read the file. |

If you see file.ext.pdf you know to just remove the PDF extension. The main problem is that videos are large so on Windows it was easy to just shrink the ~50MB video to about ~5MB just by exporting it to 640x480. Then I renamed the file to add the ".pdf" and said so in the web forum. PDF is chosen only because it allows a file size greater than half a MB. Thanks to the Macintosh file renaming instructions, I think the Macintosh users on the web forum are ok now (as the first poster to complain was the guy named Fudman who is very knowledgeable in bimmer engines so for him to complain means that it's not obvious to all Macintosh users - but when I sent him the instructions he was finally able to watch the video on his Macintosh). |

You over-complicated the problem by making it a "fake PDF". There are a ton of hosting websites where you can upload a file of any type and almost any size, and then simply post a link to it in the forum. For a video, YouTube would be the most obvious candidate, but there are plenty of other places. |

This whole issue is just another bit of fallout from the Windows nonsense of *requiring* a file extension. What nonsense might that be? Windows (and DOS) don't require an extension; OK, they normally _use_ one (and I definitely agree with all who think hiding them's a bad idea and certainly shouldn't be the _default_), but there's no _requirement_. The most obvious example being, I think, the hosts file. -- J. P. Gilliver. UMRA: 1960/1985 MB++G()AL-IS-Ch++(p)Ar@T+H+Sh0!:`)DNAf The fifth bestselling detail of all time: the Ford Transit. This whole issue is just another bit of fallout from the Windows nonsense of *requiring* a file extension. The HOSTS file, an OS file provided by Microsoft, has no file extension. I think an extension is "recommended" for naive users. And the OS does have the ridiculous default of *hiding* the extension field in File Explorer, forcing all of us in the Windows group, to turn the blasted thing on, after every Windows install we do. So I certainly wouldn't argue that the extension is "strongly recommended" by MS, by their bad choice of defaults. The extension should be exposed, to help naive users spot ".scr type" malware. But once you've got your sea legs, you can do whatever the hell you want. If you want to drag and drop the HOSTS file on top of an open Notepad window, you can. Or drop a PDF file from HP, that has no PDF extension, onto an open Acrobat Reader window. And we also take advantage of the extension subterfuge, by *purposely* adding an extension to the extension, to stop the OS from dispatching dangerous files. So for example, if I download malware.exe, I can rename it to malware.exe.bak, neutering it against double-click accidents. The topic has its pluses and minuses. It's like driving on the left, or driving on the right. You get used to it. Paul |
