pc shuts itself down
 

My pc has started to shut itself down i dont know why this is just starting
to happen i have only had it for just a year now brand new i am unable to do
much with it i am wondering if it could be the ram or the fan i just havent
got a clue. Please can somebody advise. Thankyou.

It just shuts itself off, with no notice or intervention? Is it also hard
to restart?

This can be due to thermal damage to a few components, sometimes caused by
failed fans. It's hard to tell what the failed component is without
swapping out the parts, and that means RAM, CPU and motherboard. It's also
possible that it's the power supply.

On the other hand, if it restarts itself, this can be due to a crash. The
cause may remain unknown till you right-click on My Computer, choose
Properties, Advanced, and Settings in the Startup and Recovery section.
There, de-select "automatically restart" under System failure. Choose OK
back to the desktop. Now, if it's restarting due to a crash, it will give
you some sort of message instead. This will give you at least some clue of
what's happening and why.

This started happening to me last nigiht. The computer just suddenly
goes off and when I switch it back on it will stay on for about half
an hour then go off again. I left it on while I was out today (about 6
hours) and it was still on when I came home, but it started again
about two hours later.

At first I thought you might have a virus that attacks your RPC. There are
several around that will do that. But then you mention that the machine did
stay up for 6 hours, and that leads me to think that perhaps your machine is
overheating because of a bad CPU fan. Most BIOS have a setting for just such
an occurrence. When a CPU overheats, the machine will shut down
automatically to prevent damage to the processor. You can generally tell by
the sound if the fan is failing. It will change pitch as it speeds up and
down and will sound a bit grindy.

If you have a tower, it is a relatively simple operation to replace the fan.
If its the type that lays flat, you will need to how to open the thing up.
That can sometimes be a challenge.

I recently had this happen to one of the machines I care for just a couple
of weeks ago. Installed a new fan and it now runs fine again.

Mine does the same, plus the sound card driver needs to be reinstalled.
This all started after a windows update this past week. This is the
second time it has happened to me

I have a problem with my computer too, it is driving me crazy because all of a sudden it will shut off completely. The only way i can get it too start again is if i turn of the main power supply for a few seconds. MY computer is plugged into an extension cord and when it shuts off, everything else is fine. I had originaly thought that it could be a power struggle because i do infact have another extension cord plugged into an extension strip... oops... However, the reason why I am still hesitant to say that it is a power struggle is because it has been working fine for about 4 years! Also i read that it could a virus, just recently and after the random shut downs, when i booted my computer, i would get a pop up from norton antivirus saying that it has tried to start internet worm protection but was unsuccesful. And again the reason why I am still hesitant by this being the cause, I also have a terribly hot room averaging about 80 - 85 degrees... ( i like it hot) and on this same page i read that computers are terribly picky about heat. I can hear my fans working but when i turn it on, i always hear a clicking sound and then it goes away. And also during use i hear the pitch of the fans change. It is terribly loud and then it gets louder and then softer and can repeat countless of times. Also there is a lot of dust build up by the ducts at the back. I usually have the problem when i initially start it up. IT has become increasingly worse and more frequent. However, after I have had to restart it many times, today was the most (about 5 or 6 can't possibly be good for the computer) It will run fine until i shut it off. So please if any onf you are having the same problems or could diagnose my computer please tell me! Not likely in this case, particularly if it's hard to restart; that's long
before the system would be remotely aware of any malware.

Time to think about replacing the system, as it's probably damaged due to
overheating.

Next time, pay attention to ventilation.

It sounds like hardware is failing, possibly due to heat. Unfortunately,
the only way to test is to swap out parts, which means you have to have
parts to swap, and it can be more than one part.

At this point, it will probably be cheaper to replace the system than to
swap in part after part.
