"A video capture device was not detected"
 

Trying to capture video with a canon mini dv, no luck. Have connected with
firewire cable from computer IEEE 1394 to the DV port on the camera. When I
click on capture from video device I get the message " A video capture device
was not detected". Any one have advice? Computer is new, Camera is new and
cable is new.

Hello,

Try putting the camera in Play mode and attaching the cable.

You should hear a "ding dong" sound, like the sound you hear when plugging
in a flash drive.

i can tell you ive tried this to get an answer to this for months.
never get to the "ding dong" step.

something to do with 1394 because it never recognizes the camera

Try on another PC..... if it's not recognized there, I'd suspect a faulty
firewire port on the camcorder itself.

Hello,

The cable could be faulty too.

Verify that the Firewire card is working by right-clicking on My Computer
(in Start Menu), clicking Manage, then Device Manager. If there is any
exclamation icon on any firewire (aka IEEE 1394) device, the drivers are
know installed.

If you are unable to find it, (its directly under the first level for me),
you may need to install the drivers. Sometimes the port may appear as a
"Unknown Device" if Windows has trouble identifying it.

I've tried everything too. There's been LOTS of correspondence about this
problem. So why are we all having the same problem?

I am now having this problem as well. It used to work, but when I plugged
the firewire into the camcorder today, it didn't. Nothing has changed with
the camera or computer setup. Has anyone else found a way to fix this yet?

I also have the same problem Canon HDV. Cannot detect. It recognized the
camera in Windows with the ding I believe the first time and not again after
that. Have also tried in an Adobe program as well. New Camera, cable and
computer is quite new

I have the same problem with a Panasonic Ds27 .. the firewire port works with an external disc but does not recognise the camcorder... it used to - could it be a new windows update 'feature' ?

Was having the same problem using IEEE 1394 with a Canon MV930 and
Vista. I knew that my camera worked with Vista as it has previously on a
laptop with Zoombrowser installed, but using Movie Maker (cant recall if
zoombrowser worked). when I recently upgraded to Vista on my own PC and
installed the Canon software, the camera could not be detected via
firewire (USB worked fine).
The solution was in the software upgrade. Using the the latest version
of Zoombroswer (ZoomBrowser EX Updater (6.3.1)) I could not dectect my
camera in Zoombroswer or Movie Maker. After hours of fustration I
uninstalled all the Canon software and then installed the first
Zoombrowser update compatable with Vista (ZoomBrowser EX Updater
(6.1.1a).
This resulted in my camera being detected by Vista and downloading via
Movie Maker. Zoombrowser is still not detecting my camera using
firewire, but this is acceptable as Movie Maker is adequate for now.
