File Sharing Between XP & W7
I have had two desktops, installed with XP Pro, that are LAN'ed
together, and have file sharing working just fine between them. They were created with a single user - 'administrator', with no password. Both boot up non-stop of course, and always have. Now I have another desktop installed with W7 Ultimate, and a laptop installed with W7 Home, LAN'ed with the others. Both were created with a named user (ME), without passwords. I quickly discovered that while I could share XP folders and files on the W7 machines, I could not do the reverse until I created a new named user (ME) on the two XP desktops, and until I created the same non-blank password on all four machines for that user. Now sharing is fine. Of course, I have to login at boot on all machines with the password, but I accept that as necessary. But, I wonder - I found no simple way to rename 'administrator' to (ME) on the XP desktops. I did it by creating a new user (ME) there. But then I had to re-create all of 'administrators' settings and icons MANUALLY on both XP desktops. This was arduous to say the least. Was there a way that I could have executed something to 'copy' what I needed from one user to the other? All the desktop icons? All the display settings? All the file associations? All whatevers? Hopefully simple? Be gentle please. Wo XieXie Ni Wei |
