Appolgy & question

First, my apologies to the group for being such a nuisance.

I've always (literally always in terms of PCs) had good access to
the computer. Directories, program listings with locations, etc. etc.

Now I'm in the midst of trying to learn both Win 7 (my new computer)
and Win 8 (my wife's new computer) and the lack of access to stuff
has gotten to me.

So to annoy you more I guess, two questions:
1) Is there anything like the "MyComputer" listing in XP et al ?
2) In trying to get rid of the password login nonsense, I was told
diretions: DesktopComputer(right click)manage

I get that, but I find no "Computer" choice on the desktop.
( and if I have somehow lost it, how do I recover it?)

For windows 7.. right click blank area of desktop and choose
personalize. on the page that pops up you will find " change desktop
icons" on the very left.. click on that and add or remove what you want,
in this case it would be "computer" as for win 8 I do not know as I do
not use it.

People - including me - have already told you that there is. That's
assuming that by "My Computer" you mean the file management listing of
drives, files and folders. If you can't find it, push the Win key + "E",
just like always.

Fyi...I replied in that other thread and indicated that those directions
were not necessarily accurate since Windows 8 approach to managing user
accounts is different than prior o/s.

As with any newsgroup folks are here to help and all should be commended for
doing so but its also important and incumbent upon all of us to recognize
that not every reply may be as accurate as others. If something doesn't
work as given, just ask again...and don't worry about questions being a
nuisance.

Also, and no insult intended, if you plan on upgrading to Win8.1, you're
going to need to use a Microsoft Account (email address as username and
password )to sign in to the Microsoft Store to obtain the 8.1 update.
- while it might be beneficial to bypass a Windows logon username/pw signon
it might be prudent to get used to using a Microsoft Account to sign on to
Windows 8 since MSFT's approach to deploying content (and possibly Windows
Updates in the future) may become more restrictive for validation and
security purposes.

Finally, if you still wish to bypass the Windows logon password prompt see

http://imageshack.us/a/img547/6972/bbv3.gif

When you click the folder icon at the bottom, that's
your Explorer access. Clicking "This PC" is the closest
thing to "My Computer". I've overlaid the My Computer
view from WinXP on top of it, to show the part you want
is closest to "Devices and drives".

And Win 8.1 is not Windows 98, and you won't make it look
and behave exactly the same.

The purpose of us doing mods on the OS, is to remove the
most outrageous time-wasters. Obscuring my view, by having
a giant Start menu cover the screen, is why some of us
brought back some menus. We don't want our view obscured
that way - neither do we want Metro applications taking up
the entire screen. That's not why multitasking and supporting
views were invented on computers in the first place. That
can be fixed to some extent, by using two monitors. But
I don't do that here (there isn't room on my desk to leave
a second monitor here permanently - I'd have to "house clean").

But for some of the other stuff, it's a matter of learning
where the deck chairs were moved, and where stuff is hidden.
And from that perspective, finding my disk icons isn't that
hard. It comes with practice.

As for the security features, they're modeled somewhere along
the lines of Unix/Linux, where the user runs as a user, and
only seeks administrator elevation, for administration tasks.
The intention of that, is so you won't execute malware that
seeks elevation, without at least passing through one dialog
that indicates you're about to elevate something. It turns out
to be of limited use for normal users, because eventually
they become "blind" to the extra dialog and just click it
to dismiss it without thinking about it too much. But
this behavior is very similar to current Linux, where
a "Mother May I" dialog frequently appears when you're
doing something that requires Administration level access.

You should be able to get rid of the login prompt. That's
a traditional feature that apparently wasn't removed.

And another perspective on this is, if you ever need to
re-install the OS again, how long is it going to take
you to put back all these tweaks again ? Forever, is my
guess. Only change the things that waste time, and leave
the deck chairs where they are. Then, when it comes time
to reinstall, it'll take less time to get it back to
where it was. If you're going to make a large number
of changes, at least keep a "log file" of them, so you
can reproduce them two years from now.

I wouldn't mind Youtube so much, if the people
contributing would *edit* their content before
uploading. How many times have I seen an effort
on there, that is in desperate need of a cleanup.
Even a quick pass through Windows Movie Maker, would
give the budding videographers some hints on how
to snip (it automatically does scene detection).

What are you telling me? "the Win key + "E" ---" ?
Win Key ??
What do you mean with the "+" ?
Are you saying press "+" followed by "E" ?

The Windows key (or "Win key," as some people call it) is the second
key on the left on the bottom row of a standard keyboard. Hold it
down and press the E key.

The Windows key has a logo emblazoned on it.

And, it's next to some other familiar modifier keys.

http://www.reviversoft.com/blog/wp-c...ome-screen.jpg

There are various ways to signify key sequences, but
usually what will happen, is the first key or keys are
modifier keys, and the last one is a "regular" key.

ctrl-alt-delete

In that example, you press and hold ctrl, press and
hold alt, then press and release Delete. Releasing
ctrl and alt later, in any order, at your leisure.

So the above might be put in a USENET post as

win-e
win-e
insert_some_other_shorthand...

and that would be press and hold win logo key,
then type an "e". Release win afterwards, at
your leisure.

Thank you! On mine it's Ctrl, Fn, and the logo.

That's my opinion also.
When I post here I don't need to be told to use google
or to use Youtube (of which I'm no fan) or see some facebook
page, etc etc etc. I ask it on Usenet hoping some literate
soul can answer it HERE !

You would get better answers more freely if you showed that you made
some attempt to find an answer on you own, rather than coming here
expecting to be spoonfed.
