How to format a hard dirve in windows xp as a fat32. I want to be able to save windows 98 files on a hard disk in windows xp on the network.

The best way to manage this is to use third party disk management tools such
as Partition Magic.

Alternatively there may be free downloads from the Manufacturer's web site:
Maxtor and Seagate both have tools for their hard drives, not certain as to
others.

There is no such thing as "windows 98 files".

If your computer is on the network and the drive is being shared then
any computer on the network can access the files on the shared drive,
even if it is NTFS and the other computer(s) on the network are
running Windows 95/98/Me.

All disk access is done by the computer the drive is installed in,
even when the drive is being accessed from another computer on the
network.

The only time you have a concern is if your computer is configured to
boot up 2 or more operating systems and one or more of these are
Windows 95/98/Me. Then you would need to have FAT32 drives/partitions
to install these operating system onto and for any files they needed
to access.

But in a network situation the file system used by a drive is only
relevant to the computer the drive is installed in.

Only when you dual boot does the file system matter. Files over a network
are just files.

The file systems on the various computers communicating over a
network are completely irrelevant, as none of the individual
computers' operating systems ever directly access the other computers'
hard drives. Instead, a computer sends a "request," if you will, for
the desired data, and the operating system of the host ("receiving")
computer accesses its own hard drive (whose file system it obviously
can read) and then sends that data back to the requesting computer as
neutral packets of information that are completely independent of the
file systems on the respective computers. After all, don't you use a
Windows-based PC (whether it's FAT32 or NTFS) to access data stored on
the Internet's mostly Unix servers, which use a completely different
file system?

Obtain a win98 boot disk and use that to format the disk.
