https://sourceforge.net/projects/xpy...butable/1.3.8/

Make changes --- General --- Claim Windows as Registered.

You might want to tweak some other settings.

Useful for VMs.

Why not run MGADiag, and see what the real situation is.

http://go.microsoft.com/fwlink/?LinkId=203456

Note: *Don't" copy and page material from there, without
removing license key strings or personally identifiable information first.

In some cases, a Mom&Pop computer store will install
a VLK (Volume License Key) version of the OS. They charge
you $$$, while they just "mint a new OS in the back of the shop".

The problem is, some of the licensing schemes Microsoft
uses for Enterprise, the running OS is required to log into an activation
server every three months or so. A person who got ripped
off by a Mom&Pop operation, might discover via the
Activation message, that they've been given non-genuine
materials for a home user.

Some of the hacker activation schemes also use an activation
server, and the hacker one has to keep a server of that
sort running on the Internet, so the OS stays "legit" as it were.
But if you're using something like that, you've already
read up on what to expect in the way of "operational difficulties".
Whereas the ripoff computer shops, merely "wink" at the
consumer they "help out". They don't say straight out,
"this $50 OS isn't legit, now enjoy". Nobody says that.

These are the things I'm hoping the MGADiag will mention.
If you see "Volume License Key" or words to that effect
in the output of the dump, that's a hint as to what
happened. No regular System Builder or Retail OS is
going to have a text string like that in the MGADiag
output.

It might also be an innocent mistake. One of the
Microsoft Answers forums used to deal with MGADiag
dumps and they could tell you how many shades of
screwed you were. Sometimes things corrupt in OSes,
but with the (journaled) NTFS file system to help you,
it isn't likely that the OS deactivated "for fun".

You need to buy a new machine with Windows 10 from DELL or HP because
their machines are quite reliable and Windows 10 receives digital
license for that machine and you won't have the problem you are
currently facing.

I take it you are using XP because it is doing what you want to do on
it!! If this is the case then have you thought of installing some other
OS which will do exactly what you are currently doing such as eMail,
Facebook, twitter, perhaps visiting some sites etc etc.

If you are sure your copy is legal it might be worth hitting the
"activate windows" button from Program files/accessories/system tools.
It will go through the motions and might flip the bit that gives you
the screen.

"good guy" is a well known microsoftian shill who infests these groups
the spam comment was addressed to him.

I got such a run-around with MS trying to get my legit copy activated,
that I ditched it and installed a pirated copy that was
"pre-activated."

Assuming you meant "Programs" rather than "Program files", i. e. from
the start menu, I presume the fact that I don't _have_ an "activate
windows" option under .../accessories/system tools confirms that my
Windows is genuine? (I have no reason to believe otherwise; nice to be
reassured though.)

He asked for Win XP, not Linux.
Though I agree, Linux would be a viable option for the tasks
you mentioned. With the advantage it's more secure than ANY M$ OS.

It was directed to good guy who answers every question with "throw
away your machine and buy a W/10 machine".

This is an XP forum. If people wanted to drink the Microsoft Kool Ade
they wouldn't be here.

Yes "Programs", sorry for any confusion. I navigated there on my
laptop and it was an option in programs/accessories/system tools. When
I open it I get a message that I am already activated.
I am not sure why you don't have that unless it is one of those Dells
with a generic activation someone spoke of earlier here. (or a bootleg
copy).

It's a Toshiba that I bought with 7-32 Home Premium already installed;
running MGADiag as suggested by Paul says it is genuine.
