Data from an HD that does not boot.
 

I recently bought a Startech universal dock for 2.5/3.5in Sata and IDE
HDD. I had read that the data on disks that no longer boot can be
retrieved from them. In my case the device does not show the disk. It is
a Seagate Barracuda 2TB. Does anyone have any advice apart from diving a
steam roller over it ?

have you tried other drives to be sure it's not the dock that's the
problem?

assuming the dock works, you will need recovery software. the drive
does not need to be mountable. there are a number of options.

Try a Linux Live USB/DVD.

They often times can read things Windows won't.

If that doesn't work, there is always Drive Savers, but
they are $$$$

And there is always shaking your fist at it and accusing
its parents of not being married. It doesn't work
very well, but you will feel better doing after doing it.

Test the drive by cabling up to a SATA motherboard port.
(I know it's a SATA drive, because IDE stopped at 750GB in size.)

The BIOS does a drive ID test, and fetches the drive ID
string. If the BIOS doesn't see it, then the disk is not
responding, and any usage of docks or dongles isn't going
to work.

You need to enter the BIOS and disable the splash screen,
so you can see the boot text scroll by. And you should
see a list of disks there.

If you connect it to a sata port on a working system and see if it is
recognized in the bios. If it not recognized then the steam roller will
be your best option.

I don't rally want to get involved with linux. There is nothing I
desperately need from the drive but having the Dock made we want to try
it. Its parentage was well debated when it failed about two years ago. I
actually left it unconnected in the computer and forgot about it until
giving the computer a spring clean this week.

It was not previously recognised in the BIOS. At the time it was just
out of warranty. Though some years ago I had an IBM HD that failed when
out of warranty and they replaced it as they said the serial number was
from a batch with known problems.
Once a year they have a vintage show of cars and other vehicles here.
I'll save it for the next one.

I saw a video on youtube where someone tested whether sticking the drive
in the freezer for a while would help. Sounds crazy, but if all else
fails give it a try. Let us know if any luck.

MANY years ago I resorted to that once. It did work. I was able to
copy everything off the drive before using the big sledge. I don't
remember, but I presume I let it sit for quite a while before plugging
in so that there was no condensation left inside.

copy everything off the drive before using the big sledge. I don't
remember, but I presume I let it sit for quite a while before plugging
in so that there was no condensation left inside.

more than likely a coincidence and not anything due to freezing.

and yes, condensation is definitely an issue.

recovery software should be able to see unmountable devices and
scavenge for files, assuming the drive isn't totally dead.

I have a Canon printer that falsely reported a paper jam. I put it in a
cupboard until I had enough junk to get the council to collect it. After
about A year I took it out and attached it to my wife's computer and it

I've often had things that stopped working, then would work again after
being unused for awhile. However, this "afterlife" may be a short one.
