Turn off data and only leave power on USB port?
 

How do I make a USB port in Windows 10 just provide power and not a data connection? For example my satnav has a low battery and I just want to use it indoors. But when it sees the PC, it just becomes a removable drive and I can't use it.

Good idea, but the satnav is persistent. Windows says it's ejected it, but the drive stays there and the satnav stays in USB mode.

I remembered I’d cut a USB cable in half a long time ago so I could insert an ammeter to see how much current something was drawing. So I just used that and disconnected the two data wires.

But surely Windows must have an option to change the socket into charging only?

Not that I know of. Nor would I know how to do this, off hand, for Linux
or macOS. I suspect with Linux, at the very least, there must be a way.

I can do that with my Kindle. Plug it in - comes up as USB drive.
Right-click/eject it from the control in the system tray but keep it
plugged in. USB works charging only.

Found the answer - disable the device in device manager. The computer immediately ceases communication with it, and the satnav thinks it's been unplugged. But its charging circuitry keeps running, it presumably now thinks it's plugged into a power outlet.

I can do that with my Kindle. Plug it in - comes up as USB drive.
Right-click/eject it from the control in the system tray but keep it
plugged in. USB works charging only.

My satnav reconnects instantly when I do that. For some reason it shows up as two USB drives. I ejected both and tried disabling them from the tray, but the drives remained and the satnav stayed in USB mode.

As per other posts, I've made my own with a USB extension cord. And then discovered I can just disable the device in Windows Device Manager (which remembers the setting).

That's what I did, using a USB extension I found that I'd already cut open to monitor current.

But I've since discovered I can simply disable the device in Windows device manager, and it permanently doesn't connect, but just charges.
