crazed scrolling of all menus, even from the start button

Every menu I attempt to use, whether from the desktop or an application, goes
into a crazed scrolling mode. IN Addition, often I get a message that my
desktop is not responding, or some other basic function is not responding.
When the machine powers up, I hear a clicking noise, apparently from the
hard drive. I have tried a different mouse, done numerous shut down and
restarts.
Please send me an email if you have any idea what is causing this and how to
fix it. I am about ready to reformat the drive and see if that changes
anything, but of course that's an extreme thing to do. I have a lot of things
on this computer that I don't have time or means to backup completely.

to restart,type:EXIT Restart computer.

Thanks. I tried this and it ran chkdsk, but when I tried CHKDSK C: /F, it
came up saying it had cancelled.
????? What do you think?

CRAZED SCROLLING: Another Clue: I have found that control-alt-delete will
stop the scrolling. It doesn't show an application, but when I close the
system window that control alt delete brings up, the menus seem to be
behaving again.
Does that GIVE ANYONE A CLUE AS TO WHAT IS WRONG?

I have the same problem and cannot figure out any way to fix it. Have you had
any success? The chkdsk did not do anything for me.
