FIOS or win10 changes.

I finally got FIOS today, and by coincidence, or not, there have been
several windows 10 changes just afterwards.

1) Classic Shell already had one problem and now it has mo
Has it really been replaced by Classic Start
Has that really been renamed Neo-Classic-UI
which was renamed Open Shell? Is Open Shell good?
Or should I stick with Classic Shell, which still works most of the
time.

2) Can't normalize Solitaire. Only maximized or minimized. Or normal
is the same as maximized, but when cursor is at edge of screen, the
cursor doesn't change to two-headed. It's too hard to move the mouse
around when it's maximized and when it's minimized, I can't see it. :-(

3) I run every program that allows it as maximized. Assuming my screen
is 10"H x 20"W, when I alt-tab to another program, instead of opening
up full screen, it starts about 5"x10" and within a quarter second or
less expands to full screen. But it used to always be full screen. If
this is a change in windows, anyone who uses maximized windows should
have seen it, or will sooon. Have you?

4) This might be the result of the previous change: When Firefox is
restarted and opens 15 windows within 10 seconds, it's like a sound and
light show. There are bright flashes of largely white screen in between
opening windows. There used to be no white screen. It used to open all
the windows "quietly".

5) There may be more but I want to post this.

(I realize that FIOS shooudn't have anything to do with 1 and 2, and
probalby not 3 or 4, but if it's a windows change, I'd expect some of
you to have seen hese things in the last couple days. )

micky[_4_] November 13th 19 06:18 AM

FIOS or win10 changes.

5) Until today, I could click on a task in the task list and focus would
switch to that task. Then, next, I could click on the same task and
focus would go to whatever task had the focus before. Just now I see
that the first half of this works, but the second time I click on it, on
a task that has focus, nothing happens. Losing this is really bad.

Maybe something changed in Task 7 Tweaker? (But the 7 Tweaker icon is
no longer able to be made visible from the taskbar.)

6)Several things had changed in my task bar. The language indicator EN
SP, etc disappeared, the touch screen icon appeared. And the distinction
between background tasks like AVG, stunnel, the speaker icon has
disappeared, worse actually. The little box that displayed the hidden
ones is gone, and the only ones showiwing are the speaker and the
network access icon.

Some time ago they got rid of the Taskbar Properties, which one got to
by right-clicking an empty part of the taskbar. I liked that a lot
better than putting it all in the Settings program, which takes a long
time to load and where I can't find what I want.

My Windows update history shows the most recent to be on 10/25. And
there are more available to download. I coudl also undo one or both
recent KB4.. updates, but I don't know what they did. Did tjhey break
these 6 things?

7) The icons on my desktop are gone 90% of the time. I see them at
first for a moment, and then occasionally, but basically theyre' of no
use. The desktop is blank When I click on the icon in the quick launch
bar for Desktop, nothing happens.

8) I've watched movies on a lot of websites, but the one I watched
tonight, when I made it full screen, the taskbar didn't go away like it
did before alway,s for months, on this website.)

I've rebooted windows and these two are not fixed, probably none of
them.

Run "winver" from the Start menu, and tell us whether
it reads 18362 (1903) or 18363 (1909).

That's the "soft" Upgrade that might come in after
November Patch Tuesday.

It didn't seem to be a big enough download to affect
anything, but I suspect it cheated and downloaded what
it needed in advance.

I doubt anyone has done a comprehensive test of 18363 yet.
Not the release version. If might have been on the
Slow Ring on Insider at some point.

There might not be as many people as yourself, running Classic Shell.
That may account for the lack of issues seen elsewhere.
When I installed 18363 a couple hours ago, there
was no Windows.old, so it wasn't a conventional
install. I changed OSes to move on to another project,
so didn't bash it at all.

Answer: No. All FIOS will do is make your web browsing faster. I am now
lucky to get FTTH (the the non-Verizon taint) no changes, just Windows
impact is updates don't tie-up system for days...

Not a significant error, I think, but I had this backwards. The Firefox
screens normally open mostly white, but now, in between, are flashes of
the blue desktop.

Jonathan, BTW, this is the only thing I thought might be related to
FIOS, on the theory that before, it took so much time to load a window,
the next one was ready to go as soon as the first one was done, but with
FIOS, the screen loaded so quickly, there was time for the blue desktop
to show in between. OTOH, reloading previously opened FF windows
doesn't require downloading, just loaing from FF's sessionstore area.
But I was trying to consider all possibilities, even the impossible
ones.

8-continued: Although it did give full screen at the top, just didn't
get rid of the taskbar at the bottom. And F11 with Youtube did give me
full-screen both at top and bottom and sides.

Thanks for reordering these. One more I notice this morning.

9) Contrary to the way it's been for years, and contrary to my question
just a couple days ago, now the active task in the taskbar is clearly
blue and every other task is totally black.

I've rebooted windows and these two are not fixed, probably none of
them.

It's 18362 (418) !!!!

I decided to do the pending updates, on the theory I can't complain
until I've done all the updates. That's a malicious softeware tool, a

I would hate to lose it. I didn't mention that for a couple weeks now
every time Windows starts, I get a message to update Classic Shell and
then a big red box that says someone has not allowed it to be updated,
but everything about it still worked until, it seems, yesterday.

That may account for the lack of issues seen elsewhere.

there are more available to download.

8) I've watched movies on a lot of websites, but the one I watched
tonight, when I made it full screen, the taskbar didn't go away like it
did before alway,s for months, on this website.) .......

I've rebooted windows and these two are not fixed, probably none of
them.

Run "winver" from the Start menu, and tell us whether
it reads 18362 (1903) or 18363 (1909).

It's 18362 (418) !!!!

I decided to do the pending updates, on the theory I can't complain
until I've done all the updates. That's a malicious softeware tool, a
.net framework cumulative update and a windows cumulative update.

When I installed 18363 a couple hours ago, there
was no Windows.old, so it wasn't a conventional
install. I changed OSes to move on to another project,
so didn't bash it at all.

Micky, When you are updated you should see in Winver,
Version 1909 (build 18363.476)

If you explained what FIOS was then it might be possible to ascertain
whether it has affected your issues or not. Probably not, given the
seemingly random and wide variety of issues.

I had to google it also, It is Verizons stupid abbreviation for Fiber
Optics System.
Posters who use obscure abbreviations should include the full name at
least once.

It's very odd that I have 1909 installed and although Winver reports it
correctly, I also have the registry modified to display the version on
the desktop. That display is *not* correct. It still reports 1903, even
if I reboot.

No, it's "Fiber Optics Service." You call it a stupid abbreviation; I
don't; I think it's fine, and it's well-known.

"Obscure abbreviation"? It's not at all obscure to me, nor do I think
it's obscure to most internet users in the US. I've known it for several
years, since it first came out. There are now 6,750,000 FIOS subscribers.

I'm not a subscriber to it, since it's not available here, but I've used
it many times, when I've visited my son, who has it installed. I wish I
could get it. It's much better than my Comcast service--roughly five
times as fast. Maybe one of these days, it will come here.

If you count 3Mbps as fast?

3mbps is *not* fios.

currently, the *minimum* fios speed is 100 mbit symmetrical.

3/1 is much too slow for fios and also not symmetrical.

it's dsl.
