Windows XP on a Macintosh network
 

I have attached my Dell Laptop running XP Professional., SP2, to my home
office network. The Dell is attached to a router, which in turn connects to
an enthernet hub. There is a HP Laserjet 4050 printer attached to the hub,
and a Mac G4 running OS X 10.3.6 is attached to the router. the Mac can
access the shared folder on the Dell, but the dell cannot find the Mac or the
printer.

Any ideas what I have to do the get XP to play nicely with others?

You need to run Samba on the Mac. Samba configuration on the Mac is very
easy. Make sure you've created identical user accounts/passwords on
both computers and shared out desired resources. Set permissions on the
shared resources the way you want.

What is Samba? Wherre do I get it?

You're saying that both the Mac and the PC must have identical user
accounts set up? Does that mean another user will still not be able to see
files on the other machine?

How does this address the problem of the XP machine not being able to see
the HP laser printer?

Samba is a protocol developed to allow Unix/Linux machines to network
with Windows machines. OSX is based on a form of Unix - BSD. It comes
with OSX, I believe. You'll have to look in your Mac's network
configuration settings, Help files, or try Googling for something like

I have no idea because I don't know what you did or didn't do. Did you
try to add the printer to the Windows machine? I find that HP's Network
Printer Wizard works very well to add network laser printers to Windows

Thanks, Malke.

This is all very confusing. I long for old days, when you could go to the
manual and find out anything you needed. Now, everything depends on
"Wizards", which don't even let you know what they are doing. And there are
no real manuals. Just try figuring out exacly how you have to compose a
question to coax the help facility to tell you what you need to know!

Enough venting.

Looks like Samba is taken care of by OS X when you specify "Windows sharing"
In the Preferences panel. They give me an addess that is supposed to let
Windows access the Mac. Unfortunately, Windows XP is not seeing anything on
the network except "Microsoft Windows Network". When I type in the addess
The Mac panel gives, (in the form, \999.999.9.9\username) whether in "Add a
network place" wizard, or in Tools:Map Network Drive, I get an error. When I
try to add a printer, again, the wizard cannot see anything except the
Microsoft Windows Network. I think that is the Windows printer wizard. I'll
try to find the HP one.
