I wanted to run a capture card on my computer and try as I might I
could not get ubuntu to work so I went back to windows. The problem is
I must have copied the cd key incorrectly from the laptop before I
sold it and I can't get it registered. I am sure that some letter is
wrong here DK7JPVPV6HD8VJFCGHGCMT46Y if you know what letter is wrong
great if you have a working CD key great. I have 23 days left.

If win was supplied with the laptop the key is for that laptop installation
of win, and cannot be transferred to a new PC
So if you want a key, you will have to buy a full winxp cd

Idiot! Since you've sold it and no longer own a license to operate the SW,
I'm glad it screwed on you. Using it would be piracy anyway, so you want to
consider what happens to illegals pirating MS products.
Also you've just placed what might well be the actual key in the open, in
public, for all to see and steal. And I'm damned sure not going to let you
pirate MY key!

If the copy of XP came with the PC and NOT the laptop (for instance, lets say you
just stored the key on the laptop) and therefore legitimately belongs on the computer
you are trying to [re]activate it on - then, you can phone Microsoft and they will be
happy to help you out.

If, on the other hand, the XP installation came with, and belonged to, the laptop,
and NOT on the PC - then, you're out of luck - it is quite illegal to use a copy of
Windows that came pre-installed on a different computer without paying for it.

The third possibility is that you bought a copy of XP and installed it yourself on
the laptop - again, in that case it would be illegal to have a copy of Windows active
on two separate computers.

If you would install and run Belarc Advisor it will tell you what key is on
the computer.

Incidentally, I am *not* the OP - in this case, it was "followet".

Most of the responses were to warn the OP that he/she could be doing
something illegal by using a key on a re-used XP installation or on a
duplicate one.

Plus,we all know about programs like Magic Jelly Bean Keyfinder v2.0.1 and
such, but what you may not know is; on many Windows installations, the
"key" is not included in the registry for the finder-program to find!

Not only that, but, on OEM installations , when installed on a machine for
which they were not originally designed, the product-key is not all that is
needed, but installation must be completed, online, with a
registration-code (different to the product-key)...

But I am sure the OP would thank you anyway for the information.
