I'm on the 780 and it's really messed up on both computers
in how to post but I figured it out.

This involves malwarebytes; The free premium trial expired
and it seemed to be launching a new login. I wasn't sure if
it was the free version or if was trying to re-install the free
trial premium again so I deleted it and and reinstalled it with
this link:

https://www.malwarebytes.com/

However it installed the free premium version again! I checked
and this doesn't look like the same link on the 8500 even though
the address is the same:

So why am I getting different pages with the same address? Could
you please give me a reliable link for downloading the free version
of malwarebytes?

P.s. In passing, I haven't seen anymore mice and have stuffed steel
wool in some crevices but will keep checking.

I just checked and for some reason the link and the post image show
up the same so I took a screenshot of the 780 page to show the difference
I'm seeing:

If that's the case then would you advise to just buy the product?
I mean it only makes sense, doesn't it to have the full version
considering the treat. I guess the question is will the full version
protect me from threats?

After 14 days, Malwarebytes will revert to the free (On Demand)
version, at which time Avast will stop presenting
its popup.

Malwarebytes at the moment the trial version starts,
is in "real time protection" mode.

Avast is in "real time protection" mode.

Avast doesn't like it, when it sees Malwarebytes doing that.

In 14 days time, Malwarebytes will turn off its
"real time protection" and will only do anything if
you ask it for "an On-Demand scan". That's basically
a signature scan, not behavioral detection.

You could pay for Malwarebytes or you could pay
for Avast. Avast at least, will try to snow you
with all sorts of crap of dubious value. Malwarebytes
would like to do that too, except they probably
don't have the staff or the money to do that
at the moment. Things like email scanning, web browser
scanning, and assorted bits of messing around.

If you pay for Malwarebytes, it's similar to keeping the
feature set you see now in the Trial mode. It has some
behavioral protection, which means if a new malware
with unknown signature comes along, and it tries
to hook the OS random number generator, Malwarebytes
would catch that. We don't know if Avast would
catch that.

To me, using the Free Avast for primary protection,
and keeping Free Malwarebytes for On Demand scans,
is the best usage of money. You could say as a
potential purchaser of software today, I'm not
that impressed with the quality of what is for sale.
So if running a free mode gets the job done,
that's about as far as I'd go.

There might be other brands which are more effective.
But, the winners and losers keep changing. You can use
web sites like AV-Comparatives to see which product
has the best "this or that" protection. There might be
one other web site that does similar testing.

I have been using the paid version of Malwarebytes on Windows XP for a
number of years. It is the only security program I use, in addition to
a good HOSTS file. It works beautifully and I have had no problems with
it.

I originally was using MB with Avira anti-virus but found the Avira
unnecessary. MB does what Avira did with fewer false positives and
other hiccups.

You know the routine by now.

AV products use Uninstall in Programs and Features control panel.
This is true.

But they always leave remnants behind. For this, you search
for "product name" and "cleaner" or "cleaner application".

Some of the cleaner tools, require you to do the Programs and Features
step first. This web page makes no specific mention of the Programs and Features
step, implying it is safe to use at any time.

Now, all of this being said, it's still up to the installer
logic of the thing you're trying to reinstall, as to how it
works.

The cleaner *should not* remove evidence of a Trial that has
expired. That would be silly.

Cleaners have been known to remove "paid license keys". If you
pay money for an AV, make sure you have a copy of the original
email that had the license key in it. Boxed software isn't
as common as it used to be, so I no longer have to tell you
to look in the box for a card with the License Key printed
on it. Electronic purchases require some care so that keys
are not inadvertently lost.

Chances are good, it won't take you to the free version.
I can't reproduce this here, unless I do an experiment,
wait 14 days for the materials to be ready, and then
repeat what you've done. And the end result might be
we're no better off as a result of doing the experiment.

Summary: Try the cleaner. With no guarantee it will change a thing.

I cleaned it and then reinstalled it and was able to turn off the real time scanning.

btw so far no mice.
