Copying over HD?
 

I don't know nothing about computers and I want to put a new HD in because I
think the old one is going bad can I just copy the old one over to the new
one or will it just copy the bad stuff over to it to?

Sarge, if you had Win98SE or WinMe I would recommend using Xcopy and just
copy everything over to the new drive
after you partitioned and formatted it. But since WinXP is a different
animal do a clean Install. Check here for more info

After WinXP is installed on the new drive you can connect the old one
as slave and access any important files or info
from it.

Your solution depends on whether it's a software or hardware problem. To
replace a disk (without doing a complete reinstall) you'd normally use
"imaging" software like Ghost or TrueImage. If it's a software problem, a
new disk won't help. For better advice give us much more background, but it
sounds to me that you'd be better getting hands-on help - I fear you'll run
into more problems if you try to fix (whatever it is) yourself.

The HD manufacturers have software that will copy the old drive to the
new drive and then you can remove the old drive. For instance Seagate
calls theirs "DiscWizard 2003".

Sarge to be honest, the other responses are helpful but if you dont know
anything about computers i would take it to a computer shop and ask them to
fit it for you for around £30/$60, this will then be done correctly and you
also have a resource to ask if it doesnt work a few months later.

So does Maxtor. Maxtor also has a disc check program.
