PC takes hour to load
My pc has suddenly started to go really slow. It takes 50 minutes from switch on to get to desktop. When I click on something on desktop it takes approx 5 miutes to open, and I can only open one thing at a time, so i have to choose carefully, as they wont close without using cntrl, alt, del.
I tried to run anti virus today but it was going so slowly it took 7 1/2 hours, then I stopped it, but up till then it hadnt found any threats. I tried to do disc clean up, to delete temp files etc, but even that took 1 1/2 hours before crashing. Free space is 71% I havent installed anything before this started happening, and Im not sure what I can do to find any cause. I would be very greatful for any advise. Thanks Lel |

Have your tried the System Restore to a date before the problem?

Please post copies of all Error and Warning Reports appearing in
the System and Application logs in Event Viewer for the last boot. No Information Reports or Duplicates please. Indicate which also appear in a previous boot. You can access Event Viewer by selecting Start, Control Panel, Administrative Tools, and Event Viewer. When researching the meaning of the error, information regarding Event ID, Source and Description are important. HOW TO: View and Manage Event Logs in Event Viewer in Windows XP http://support.microsoft.com/kb/308427/en-us Part of the Description of the error will include a link, which you should double click for further information. You can copy using copy and paste. Often the link will, however, say there is no further information. http://go.microsoft.com/fw.link/events.asp (Please note the hyperlink above is for illustration purposes only) A tip for posting copies of Error Reports! Run Event Viewer and double click on the error you want to copy. In the window, which appears is a button resembling two pages. Click the button and close Event Viewer.Now start your message (email) and do a paste into the body of the message. You might boot diagnostics, particularly the
temperature sensor tests, and see if it thinks something is overheating. It might be slowing down the processor or turning off the cache to cool it down. The Dell Inspiron 6400 had this trouble when it got UNDER about 55 degrees F, and it went really really slow after that. A BIOS revision fixed it. 50 degrees F was reported as 255 degrees C. Recent cool weather might have provoked something like that. -- On the internet, nobody knows you're a jerk. |

I cant restore from a previous date as when i looked the fire wall was turned off and no restore points are available. If it isnt a virus would i be able to somehow clear it all off and re load xp from disc? do you think this is an option, and if so do you think its easy enough to perform? many thanks for your help Lel |

Run disk cleanup and then defrag again.

If it isnt a virus would i be able to somehow clear it all off and re load xp from disc? do you think this is an option, and if so do you think its easy enough to perform? many thanks for your help Lel Clean Install, Repair Install etc as such have their more-or-less-easy procedures to follow, however are side effects like loss of data, re-installation of drivers, SP2 with updates etc another story. So it might not be the first step to take, at least not before having assessed the way the disk clean up was performed, in case this is the cause of the problem. In case you feel that the computer is not infested (otherwise priority one is to clean the PC), you may check (and report) the Windows Manager (ctrl+alt+del): - CPU usage (Performance Tab). When high, go to Processes and note any with high CPU workload. - Commit Charge (Performance Tab) what are the current values for Total, the Limit and the Peak? Verify RAM installed (Start\Run msinfo32.exe) versus in use (My Computer, rightclick Properties, lower righthand corner of General?). Boxes checked were all, including temp int files, downloaded files, recycle bin, compress old files, Im sorry I cant remeber which ones come up, as cant use the comp as its too slow and on vista at the mo. It did take ages and ages to generate list and then to perform once confirmed.
