Reinstalling TCP/IP on XP

Problem is on XP Home. It doesn't get an IP assigned to it, and the
response to
ping 192.168.2.1
is similar to
Pinging àÉÇ with 32 bytes of data:

So I used "netsh int ip reset" but no change.

Then I tried the method in the KB for Server 2003 to uninstall it first, but
it won't reinstall.

Next I was going to try sfc and reapplying SP3. I just wanted to ask if
there's another option I haven't thought of.

Before anything else, check the two basic things:

1.- There is a DHCP server at 192.168.2.1 ?.
2.- Is the DHCP Client service running at your PC ?.

Yes, those were both true initially. Without the service, the IP would have
been 0.0.0.0 instead of 169...

You might try "netsh winsock reset catalog" which worked for this guy
a while back.

Or in command prompt try ipconfig. ipconfig /? will give a menu of
commands.
