SP2 Remove
 

Hi Folks,

I need to remove SP2 in order to install an earlier version of windows on my
computer. Is there a way that I can do this.

Why do you "need" to do this? It's a very bad thing to do.

Hi Ken,

I have an old computer and I want to wipe the hard drive so that I may
resinstall xp afresh. The problem is the computer is running a newer version
of the windows than the setup disk i have. It keeps telling me it can't
install because the windows on the computer is newer than the windows on the
disk. I have tried to boot this cd from reboot and this doesn't work either.
Someone else told me the problem may because of sp2 and I thought if I
removed this, then I could run the older setup disk!
Can yopu help?

If you're trying to do a fresh install of XP, whatever it is your'e doing
isn't working. A fresh install won't give a refusal to install because of
what's there already; it will just go ahead and start the install process.

It doesn't sound like you're booting from the XP CD. Assuming you have the
CD, that's what you must accomplish. If you aren't getting a chance to boot
from the CD, you may have to go into your BOS settings and tell it to try to
boot from the CD first, and then from the hard drive.
Once you get that straight and boot from the CD, it'll come up with a
message about "press a key to boot from the cd ... " and when you do that,
you'll be in the install process. Next just delete and recreate the
partition, and let the screen instructions guide you.

Back up your data first, of course, as everything is going to get wiped out.
You'll have to restore your data back to the machine and reinstall the XP
hotfixes, probaby best with autoupdate, etc..

OK, I'm almost always against doing this, but at least I understand
the issue now. See below:

It's telling you this because you are trying to do the installation
incorrectly. When you do it correctly, it formats the drive, and
doesn't care in the slightest what's on the drive to start out.

That's what you have to do. To boot from the CD, you have to set the
boot order to CD first in the BIOS setup program. How to get into your
BIOS depends, not on Windows, but on what motherboard/BIOS you have.
As a matter of fact, you have to access the BIOS before Windows even
starts to boot. One common way is to press the Del key when you first
power on, but that's not necessarily right for your computer. Watch
the screen carefully when you first boot; there's often a message
there telling you what to do. If not, check your system documentation
or check with your vendor.

Once you get into the BIOS and change the boot order, just boot from
the Windows XP CD (change the BIOS boot order if necessary to
accomplish this) and follow the prompts for a clean installation
(delete the existing partition by pressing "D" when prompted, then
create a new one).

That "someone" told you the wrong thing. The previous version is
pertinent for some situations, but it's not here.
