What everyone needs to know

If your computer is a on a Windows Platform you need to disable the
Services that Windows leaves opens, for starters. Most home users
aren't using a Virtual Private Network, Mail Server, FTP Server, TCP
Server and so on. You also need to install a Firewall, whether it be
software or hardware oriented ONLY before you put your computer on the
Internet. Trojan Horses disable anti-virus and firewalls. An
anti-virus application will secure your computer to "some" degree, but
NOT unless you can secure your e-mail, browser and internet settings and

applications. Without the above security, the malicious hackers are
already abusing your computers to take down Networks, Servers, trade
drugs, guns, bo*bs, and so on.
This is only a small list of areas which deal with security, malware,
backdoors, trojan horses and more.

Debbie! Long time no see! Not since January! Still trying to sell that
book of miserable "security advice", are you?

Just like a toothache - you don't know how much you miss it until it comes
back.

:-)

P.S. - What's a TCP server? Is that like one of those silver wedgie-things
you use to slice and serve pies and cakes? VBSEG

P.P.S. - You misspelled "b**bs". Have a nice day.

With everything that's going on in the world today I believe Tracker was
very smart using the asterisk in lieu of the letter that completes the word.
Otherwise, his door may get kicked in at any moment and he may be lying on
the floor face down with a dozen well armed guys bending his arms clear
above his head while cuffing him. And for what, just trying to help folks
out by sharing information that many of us are very glad to read and apply
where appropriate......thanks Tracker.

If one thinks about it too much it's a nightmare. Don't install everything
that is available, rather only stuff from reputible companies - and don't
even trust some of them too much. I've heard there's a company selling cheap
printers and its CD-ROM installs spyware/adware along with the printer
drivers.

Naturally, surf with scripting off as default, and keep your system patched.
Run and AV program too. Some guys insist on a firewall of somesort so they
can watch the goings on.

At the local library. Or for someone considering buying a new computer. Or
for someone reinstalling after XP goes belly up on them. From their
computer at work. From a friend's PC . . . .

They haven't? All the available evidence would suggest differently. MS's
push for more secure code only began a few years ago. And some of their
moves since have been more than a little suspect. Holding up the Address
bar patch to roll it up in a bigger patch. MS did the same thing in April,
holding up patches to roll them together. It's only a matter of time before
a Windows vulnerability gets leaked before MS releases a patch.

Holding up patching holes is negligent in my book.

I find that people that
make those kinds of statments have never written a single line of
code. Amazing!

I find it amazing that a person that gives their name as "Unknown," would
think anyone would take a word they say seriously.

Yes, I have read posts from this group at different public libraries. Also
from work, and friend's and family member's PCs. This OP I read from my
computer, but I already know how to protect my computer from the all the
MicroHoles. This group are filled with people stopping by that may not
realize that something running in the background that they never need may be
making their computers less secure.
