I followed the directions to sign up for the Outlook Express Newsgroup
(add newsgroup) on My husband's Outlook Express mail box and now
everything is gone from his folder "Deleted items" folder where he
was storing mail. Joining a Newsgroup does a "Clean Install" ..no
one mentioned this in the join up procedure. ANy way to retrieve
anything would be a happy ending.... Restore Points unsuccessful.
thank you Paula in Stockton ............ I am in trouble!

Ummm - the Deleted Items folder is for ITEMS THAT ARE DELETED! What
numbskull "stores" emails in the Deleted Items folder?

Sheeesh!

And joining a newsgroup should have NO effect on any mail folders AT ALL so
I don't quite know what you did.

Joining an Outlook Express newsgroup does not perform a "clean install"
and does not delete any files. You must have inadvertently emptied the
"Deleted Items" folder. Storing email in the "Deleted Items" folders is
not a very prudent thing to do. Sorry, those files are gone.

Yes indeed you are in trouble.

Setting up a newsgroup merely adds a newsgroup to the list. It does not do
a clean install, or any kind of install. It merely adds a newsgroup. Not
one mentioned it for just that reason, it doesn't happen. Therefore, you
must have done something, like perhaps the click the very handy button to
delete mail out of the deleted mail folder.

If you want to store email, make a new folder with a name like, perhaps
"Stored mail" to store it in. Why did you think they called it "Deleted
items.dbx"?

Couple of things to try

(1) Check that you're checking the right "Deleted Items" folder. You may
have more than one in your list of folders.

(2) If you can also access your email via the web ie by logging on to the
relevant website (eg hotmail.com for a hotmail account etc) then try
accessing the mail account in that way, to see what you may be able to
retrieve

you may have inadvertently checked the box 'Empty messages from the deleted
items folder on exit' on the Maintenance tab of the Options dialog in OE -
check that - if you have, then those messages are flagged as deleted in the
'deleted items.dbx' file in the OE store directory (where OE keeps its
mail/news files), but the messages might still be contained inside IF you
haven't also compacted the folders in OE. you can drag the file 'deleted
items.dbx' into notepad and see if the messages are still there. however,
extracting them into a human readable form might be a problem, since the
database file is in binary format. in any case, if the deleted items.dbx
file shows that the messages are still inside, immediately make a copy of
the file by right-clicking on it, choose copy, then right-click on desktop
and choose paste (paste, not past shortcut). then you can do further
research on how to recover the contents of that database file.

let us know

oh yeah, you better show your husband how to create new folders in OE so he
can archive his messages in there, using the Deleted Items folder to archive
mail is just asking for trouble!

note, you can locate the OE database files in:

C:\Documents and Settings\username\Local Settings\Application
Data\Identities\{ID}\Microsoft\Outlook Express

where 'username' = the currently logged on user and 'ID' is a really long
alphanumeric of the OE user identity, there will be only one ID if you
haven't created multiple identities

OK I made a new folder for storing mail. And no I didn't delete
anything..what to learn is that OE dumps the "deleted items folder"
as part of its add newsgroup program..it does take out the trash an MS tech told me.
Thank you for helping..and I got some fantastic news about going
to windows\application data\Identities\Outlook Express folder and some other
ideas as well under the responses...

Hello Carey..Well your tech support told me that adding a newsgroup in O.E.
does set up a daily trash-take out..It does empty the "deleted items folder" and they said it does it as a regular part of it's setup. DO you know about this?
